Job Summary and Responsibilities

As a Lab Assistant, you will play a crucial role in solving diagnostic mysteries, bringing us one step closer to effectively treating patient illnesses and injuries. Every day you will utilize your expertise and our advanced technology to precisely collect, prepare, and process a diverse range of patient specimens (blood, urine, tissue, etc.) for various diagnostic tests.

  • Demonstrate meticulous attention to detail.
  • Maintain an eager commitment to continuous learning and professional development.
  • Practice positive patient identification at all times, in all job functions.
  • Receive and prepare various specimens for analysis.
  • Properly label and aliquot specimens.
  • Perform department specimen intake, processing, and organization for the technical testing area.
  • Support department functions such as culture plating, histology staining, and specimen loading on instruments.
  • Review pending test lists to assist with department turnaround time.
  • Assist in solving problems, investigating specimen issues, and addressing customer inquiries.
  • Provide information regarding specimen and testing status as appropriate.
  • Monitor and stock department supplies and reagents.
  • Log reagents and supplies, following department protocols.

Job Requirements

  • Required: High School Graduate General Studies, or High School GED General Studies, upon hire.
  • Prior experience: 6 months experience in an acute care facility, upon hire.
  • Preferred: Certificate from an Other Lab Assistant Program, or Certificate from an Other Phlebotomy program, upon hire.

St. Luke’s Health - The Woodlands Hospital is a 245-bed facility serving North Harris and Montgomery counties. The hospital has been recognized as a Best Hospital by U.S. News & World Report, and is proud to serve as the clinical home for the Dan L Duncan Cancer Center. The hospital was awarded an “A” hospital safety grade by The Leapfrog Group in both 2023 and 2025. Clinical services provided include cardiovascular services, diagnostic imaging, women’s services (digital mammography and bone density studies), neurosciences, pediatric care (Newborn and Level III nurseries), surgery, pathology and pulmonary services, and sleep disorder services.

Pay Range

$19.49 - $27.52 /hour
