About the role
Performs all specimen collection by phlebotomy from the correct individual at in-house or off-site locations. In addition, obtains other specimens when indicated, and instructs patients in the collection of specimens as necessary.
Responsibilities
- Performs proper specimen collection [blood and non-blood], including patient preparation, labeling, handling, preservation or fixation, processing or preparation, transportation, and storage of specimens; complies with all standards for laboratory procedures.
- Collaborates with the appropriate supervisor, clinical laboratory technologists, cytotechnologists or other designated laboratory personnel to ensure tasks are performed as necessary.
- Processes specimens according to established guidelines.
- Maintains safe and clean working environment and protects patients and employees by adhering to infection-control, hazardous waste and other policies and protocols.
- Performs waived tests and assists in other testing platforms with technical oversight.
- Assists in quality control and performance improvement activities. Ensures standards are met (quality, timeliness, customer service, etc.).
- Orients and/or trains new staff.
- Affirms compliance with all regulatory and other agency requirements, laws, and statutes pertaining to the operation of the department.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Preferred: Certified as a phlebotomy technician.
- Previous experience drawing blood or phlebotomy training course in approved program.
- Previous experience in a clinical laboratory environment.
