Performs specimen collection by phlebotomy from patients at in-house or off-site locations, obtains other specimens as indicated, and instructs patients in specimen collection when necessary. May enter pathology specimens into computerized information systems and prepare/stain cytology specimens. Functions across laboratory areas under supervision with appropriate training.

Responsibilities

  • Performs proper specimen collection (blood and non-blood), including patient preparation, labeling, handling, preservation or fixation, processing, transportation, and storage; complies with all laboratory procedure standards.
  • Collects, verifies, and processes patient registration data and test orders in hospital/laboratory information systems, including ABN compliance.
  • Processes specimens according to established guidelines.
  • Maintains a safe and clean working environment by adhering to infection-control, hazardous waste, and other policies/protocols.
  • Performs waived tests and assists in other testing platforms with technical oversight.
  • Assists in quality control and performance improvement activities.
  • Ensures standards are met for quality, timeliness, and customer service.
  • Orients and/or trains new staff.
  • Assists in ensuring compliance with regulatory and agency requirements, laws, and statutes for department operations.
  • Answers telephone calls, performs computer tasks, prints reports, and provides test results as applicable.
  • Performs therapeutic phlebotomies.
  • Dispatches and manages specimens/slides for consults, referrals, and other requests; creates transport lists for tracking.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent (required).
  • Certified as a phlebotomy technician (preferred).
  • Previous experience drawing blood or completion of a phlebotomy training course in an approved program (preferred).
  • Previous experience in a clinical laboratory environment (preferred).

Schedule

  • Part-time.
  • Daily work times: varied.
  • Hours per pay period: 40.
  • On-call: no.
  • Weekends: yes.
