About the role

Follow the policies and procedures of the facility governing the administering of medications to residents. Note and report errors in the administration of medications. Assist in developing and implementing procedures or programs to identify medication errors.

Responsibilities

  • Note and report errors in the administration of medications.
  • Absorb and implement new procedures or programs to prevent medication errors.
  • Complete necessary forms, charts, reports, etc., and submit as required.
  • Maintain a friendly, productive, working relationship with other members of the nursing department, attending physicians, the Medical Director, and pharmacists.
  • Report complaints or grievances made by residents to the Director of Nursing Services.
  • Participate and cooperate with facility surveys (inspections) made by authorized government agencies.
  • Participate in Quality Assurance programs, the Pharmaceutical Services Committee, and other facility committees.
  • Accurately and safely prepare, administer, and document oral and topical medications.
  • Verify medications brought into the facility by newly admitted residents.
  • Follow facility policies and procedures regarding the destruction of medications.
  • Follow labeling policies and practices of the facility.
  • Ensure medications are properly labeled and documented.
  • Document and remove discontinued medications.
  • Follow procedures for handling drug receipt errors.
  • Notify the Director of Nursing Services and sign a written error report.
  • Ensure medications are held for residents transferring out or whose medications are discontinued.
  • Observe and verify that medication is ingested or applied as directed.
  • Document instances where prescribed medication is not administered.
  • Promptly notify the appropriate staff of any errors or reactions to medications.
  • Verify the identity of the resident before administering medication.
  • Accurately measure, record, and report vital signs.
  • Allow residents to self-administer their medications if permitted.
  • Be familiar with common medical abbreviations, symbols, and terms relevant to medication administration.
  • Attend and participate in continuing education programs.
  • Agree not to disclose resident's protected health information and report any violations.
  • Perform all assigned tasks in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Follow work assignments and schedules.
  • Cooperate with inter-departmental personnel and other facility personnel.
  • Maintain confidentiality of resident care information, including protected health information.
  • Report incidents of unauthorized disclosure of such information.
  • Supervisory responsibilities: None.

    Qualifications

    • High school education or equivalent.
    • Licensed Medication Aide with successful completion of a state-approved training program and any necessary examinations.
    • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
    • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
    • Ability to present information and respond to questions from managers and employees.
    • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables.
    • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
    • Reasoning ability: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
    • Physical demands: Occasional lifting and moving up to 25 pounds; prolonged use of a desk top or laptop computer; frequent use of office-related equipment; extended periods of sitting, standing, walking, talking, reading, hearing, and using hands and fingers.
    • Work environment: Noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate.
    • Critical features: Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
