Essential Duties
- Follow the policies and procedures of the facility governing the administering of medications to residents.
- Note and report errors in the administration of medications.
- Absorb and implement procedures or programs to identify medication errors, their frequency, location, and causes, and strategies to prevent them.
- Perform administrative tasks, such as filling out necessary forms, charts, and reports, and submitting them as required.
- Maintain a positive and cooperative relationship with other members of the nursing department, attending physicians, the Medical Director, and pharmacists.
- Report any complaints or grievances from residents to the Director of Nursing Services.
- Participate in facility surveys (inspections) conducted by authorized government agencies upon request.
- Engage in Quality Assurance programs, the Pharmaceutical Services Committee, and other facility committees or initiatives that affect the medication process.
- Accurately and safely prepare, administer, and document oral and topical medications commonly used in the facility.
- Ensure that medications brought by newly admitted residents are examined and identified by the attending physician or the facility pharmacy.
- Follow facility policies and procedures for disposing of medications, including documentation requirements.
- Adhere to labeling policies and practices of the facility, ensuring all medications are properly labeled.
- Document and remove medications that are discontinued by the attending physician.
- Follow facility procedures for handling drug receipt errors, including reporting them and obtaining signatures from observers/witnesses.
- Ensure that medications are held for residents who are transferred from the facility or whose medications are discontinued.
- Observe and verify that residents ingest or apply medications as directed.
- Notify the Charge Nurse, Nurse Supervisor, or Director of Nursing Services promptly of any medication errors or adverse reactions.
- Verify the identity of the resident before administering medication.
- Accurately measure, record, and report vital signs of residents.
- Follow the facility's procedures for residents to self-administer medications.
- Be familiar with common medical abbreviations, symbols, and terms related to medication administration.
- Attend and participate in continuing education programs to stay updated on professional developments.
- Agree not to disclose resident’s protected health information and promptly report any violations.
- Perform all assigned tasks in accordance with established policies and procedures, and follow work schedules.
- Cooperate with inter-departmental personnel and other facility personnel to ensure adequate nursing services.
- Maintain confidentiality of all resident care information, including protected health information.
- Report any known or suspected unauthorized attempts to access the facility’s information system.
- Supervisory Requirements: No supervisor responsibilities.
Qualifications
- High school education or equivalent.
- Licensed Medication Aide with successful completion of a state-approved training program and any necessary examinations.
