About the role
Follow the policies and procedures of the facility governing the administering of medications to residents. Note and report errors in the administration of medications. Assist in developing and implementing procedures or programs to identify medication errors.
Responsibilities
- Note and report errors in the administration of medications.
- Avoid medication errors by verifying medications brought into the facility by newly admitted residents.
- Participate in Quality Assurance programs and the Pharmaceutical Services Committee.
- Accurately and safely prepare, administer, and document oral and topical medications.
- Verify the identity of the resident before administering medication.
- Accurately measure, record, and report vital signs of residents.
- Follow facility procedures for drug receipt errors and document them.
- Ensure proper labeling and documentation of medications.
- Document and remove discontinued medications.
- Observe and verify that medication is ingested or applied as directed.
- Notify appropriate personnel of any errors or reactions to medications.
- Attend and participate in continuing education programs.
Requirements
- High school education or equivalent.
- Licensed Medication Aide with successful completion of a state-approved training program and any necessary examinations.
Qualifications
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
- Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
- Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from managers and employees.
- Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
- Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
- Reasoning ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
Skills
- Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions to practical situations.
- Ability to understand and use common medical abbreviations, symbols, and terms relative to the administration of medications.
