About the Role

The primary purpose of your job position is to assist in the administering of medications to residents as ordered by the attending physician, under the direction of the attending physician, the nurse supervisor or charge nurse, and the Director of Nursing Services. The administration of medications shall be in accordance with established nursing standards, the policies, procedures, and practices of this facility, and the requirements of this state.

Essential Duties

  • Follow the policies and procedures of the facility governing the administering of medications to residents.
  • Note and report errors in the administration of medications.
  • Absorb and implement procedures or programs to identify medication errors, their frequency, location, and cause, and develop strategies to prevent them.
  • Complete necessary forms, charts, reports, etc., and submit these as required.
  • Maintain a friendly, productive, working relationship with other members of the nursing department, attending physicians, the Medical Director, and pharmacists.
  • Report any complaints or grievances made by residents to the Director of Nursing Services.
  • Participate in facility surveys and Quality Assurance programs.
  • Accurately and safely prepare, administer, and document oral and topical medications.
  • Verify medications brought into the facility by newly admitted residents.
  • Follow facility policies and procedures regarding the destruction of medications.
  • Follow labeling policies and practices of the facility.
  • Ensure medications are properly labeled and documented.
  • Document discontinued medications and follow facility procedures for holding medications.
  • Notify the Director of Nursing Services of any drug receipt errors and document them.
  • Observe and verify that medication is ingested or applied as directed.
  • Report any errors or reactions to medications by residents promptly.
  • Verify the identity of the resident before administering medication.
  • Measure, record, and report vital signs of residents.
  • Allow residents to self-administer medications if permitted by facility policy.
  • Be familiar with common medical abbreviations, symbols, and terms relevant to the administration of medications.
  • Attend and participate in continuing education programs.
  • Agree not to disclose resident's protected health information and report any violations.
  • Perform all assigned tasks in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Follow work assignments and schedules.
  • Cooperate with inter-departmental personnel to maintain adequate nursing services.
  • Maintain confidentiality of resident care information, including protected health information.
  • Report any unauthorized attempts to access facility's information system.

Qualifications

  • High school education or equivalent.
  • Licensed Medication Aide with successful completion of a state-approved training program and any necessary examinations.

Physical Demands

  • Sit, stand, walk, and talk frequently.
  • Frequent use of a desktop or laptop computer.
  • May be necessary to assist in the evacuation of residents during emergencies.

Work Environment

  • Noise level: Low to moderate.
