About the role

This position is responsible for the operation and maintenance of water distribution system equipment, including but not limited to backhoes, loaders, trenchers, and other heavy equipment used in the installation, repair, and maintenance of water mains, hydrants, valves, and services.

Responsibilities

• Operate heavy equipment such as backhoes, loaders, trenchers, and other related equipment in a safe and efficient manner.
• Perform routine maintenance and minor repairs on equipment to ensure operational readiness.
• Assist in the installation, repair, and maintenance of water mains, hydrants, valves, and services.
• Excavate trenches for water line installation and repair, ensuring proper depth and alignment.
• Backfill and compact trenches using appropriate materials and methods.
• Operate equipment to load, unload, and transport materials, tools, and equipment to and from job sites.
• Perform related work as assigned, including but not limited to traffic control, site cleanup, and assisting other crews.
• Adhere to all safety protocols and procedures, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
• Maintain accurate records of equipment usage, maintenance, and repairs.
• Respond to emergency calls for water system repairs and maintenance as needed.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED equivalent.
• Valid Arizona Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with appropriate endorsements, or the ability to obtain one within 90 days of hire.
• Minimum of two (2) years of experience operating heavy equipment, preferably in a water utility or public works environment.
• Knowledge of water distribution systems and related equipment is preferred.
• Ability to read and interpret maps, plans, and blueprints.
• Ability to work in a variety of weather conditions and perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting up to 50 pounds, bending, stooping, and working in confined spaces.
• Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively as part of a team.
• Must pass a pre-employment drug test and background check.

Pay

$20.18 - $27.24 per hour, depending on qualifications and experience.

Schedule

• Full-time position, typically Monday through Friday, with occasional overtime and emergency call-outs as needed.
