About the role

The Ironworker General Foreman directs and supervises a crew in planning, layout, installation, and alignment of structural steel and related components in accordance with plans, specifications, tolerances, industry standards, and codes. This role coordinates the efforts of journeymen and craftsmen, ensuring work is performed safely, productively, correctly, and efficiently. The General Foreman also collaborates with other crafts, provides on-the-job training, and motivates the crew to meet project goals.

Responsibilities

• Identify and mitigate safety hazards, ensuring compliance with MasTec Safety Manual policies (e.g., fall protection, confined space, LOTO, trenching).
• Implement and train crew on 100% tie-off/fall protection, lockout/tagout procedures, and daily equipment inspections.
• Lead daily safety practices, including supervisor audits, craft observations, SLT meetings, and reporting all safety events/near misses.
• Read, interpret, and enforce contract plans, specifications, and applicable codes; inspect crew work for compliance and correct deficiencies.
• Ensure crew members are qualified, certified, and equipped to perform their work safely and efficiently.
• Produce quality work meeting industry standards and complete/submit required quality paperwork and system sign-offs.
• Manage assigned budgets, meeting or exceeding budgeted man-hours; conduct effective gang box meetings and align crew performance goals.
• Inspect field conditions, identify problems/inaccuracies, and implement corrective actions or cost-saving measures.
• Follow MasTec’s planning process, including 1-week look-ahead schedules, daily goal cards, JSAs, and task planning.
• Perform essential functions of craft workers under supervision and lead task planning sessions for assigned work.
• Address employee suggestions, complaints, and safety concerns; devise and implement action plans.
• Coordinate with warehouse and superintendent to ensure adequate tools, materials, and equipment are available for upcoming work.
• Develop a thorough understanding of project scope, plans, specifications, and schedules; communicate these to crews during gang box meetings.
• Provide on-the-job training, complete performance reviews, and review JSAs daily with coaching for assigned crews.
• Maintain productivity, a positive attitude, and adherence to HR policies and applicable employee laws.
• Prepare weekly 1-week schedules based on superintendent’s 3-week/6-week schedule; review crew timecards for accuracy.
• Perform other job-related duties as requested by supervisor.

Requirements

• 4+ years of related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• NCCER Certification/License (preferred).
• Minimum 3 years of experience in a supervisory role.
• Knowledge of MIC Health and Safety programs and project-specific regulations; active participation in daily toolbox meetings.
• Ability to read and interpret safety rules, operating/maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
• Basic arithmetic skills (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division) and ability to perform operations using units of weight, measurement, and volume.
• Ability to follow written/oral instructions and work within precise standards of accuracy.
• Maintain strong team relations with crew members and supervisors.

Physical Demands

• Work up to 12-hour shifts performing hard physical labor in varying temperatures and outdoor conditions.
• Frequently lift and carry objects up to 50 pounds; push, pull, stoop, kneel, balance, crouch, crawl, and climb.
• Repetitive and continuous physical tasks for several-hour intervals.
• Work in uncontrolled environmental conditions (e.g., extreme weather, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, loud noises).
• Wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) such as safety-toed shoes, gloves, glasses, hearing protection, hardhat, and vest.
• Navigate confined, cluttered, and uneven areas; work at heights while adhering to fall-protection requirements.
• Visual acuity (natural or corrected) to evaluate objects, drawings, and slight differences in shapes/shadings; ability to visualize 3D objects from drawings.
• Good balance, hand-eye-foot coordination, and hearing (natural or corrected).

Schedule

Full-time position, typically 50 hours per week. Schedule is project-dependent and may require up to 90% travel, with presence directly on the project site. Intermittent travel to residence of record is required.

Pay

$42.00/hour, commensurate with experience.
