Intern, Sleep Lab
SRI’s Human Sleep Research Program within the Center for Health Sciences conducts multidisciplinary research to better understand sleep and its relationship with health and behavior. Our work spans wearable technologies for measuring sleep and physiology, sleep deprivation, women’s health, neuropsychology, and neuroimaging. This internship offers hands-on exposure to a wide range of research methods and technologies, including overnight EEG recordings, wearable-derived biosignals, cognitive assessments, clinical measures, bioassays, and multimodal MRI.
About the role
This internship provides the opportunity to contribute to multiple human research studies while working alongside an interdisciplinary team. It is ideal for someone interested in gaining broad research experience with applications to human health and emerging health technologies. The role is on-site in Menlo Park, CA, and requires overnight shifts.
Responsibilities
- Support multiple human sleep research studies conducted within the Human Sleep Research Program.
- Assist with participant-facing research visits, including overnight, evening, afternoon, and early-morning study procedures.
- Remain awake, alert, and attentive throughout overnight research shifts.
- Assist with collection of physiological and behavioral research data, including overnight EEG/sleep recordings, wearable device data, cognitive and neuropsychological assessments, self-report and clinical measures, and bioassays.
- Support collection of multimodal MRI data and other study-specific procedures as needed.
- Assist with research data entry, organization, quality control, and preparation for analysis.
- Contribute to data analysis and visualization projects, potentially including analyses of wearable, sleep, cognitive, physiological, and neuroimaging data.
- Follow study protocols and research procedures to ensure accurate, consistent, and high-quality data collection.
- Work collaboratively with research staff across multiple projects and assist with other research activities as needed.
Requirements
- Current Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD student in psychology, neuroscience, biology, cognitive science, or a related field.
- Must be a U.S. citizen.
- Interest in sleep research is a plus.
- Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills.
- Ability to work overnight shifts.
Pay
The salary range is $17.55–$23 per hour, based on factors such as geographic location, market competitiveness, and internal equity. Positions may also qualify for SRI’s Pay for Outstanding Performance program or the annual Performance-Based Compensation program.
Schedule
Part-time, year-round role requiring 10–20 hours per week, including overnight shifts.
