About The Position
The position is located in the Utilities Division of the Public Works Department. The position may be involved in the various facets of field operations related to meter reading. The current openings are in the Customer Service Section where they are responsible for meter reading and repair and customer service. Eligible candidates will be considered for future hiring in other areas of the Division such as Water Distribution, Water Supply or Sanitation.
Examples Of Essential Functions
- Conduct meter reading of manual and/or radio-read meters;
- Performs meter audits, repairs and installs new or replaces existing meters;
- Performs water loss audit and pressure and flow tests;
- Handle customer complaints and access database to input and access customer information;
- Be available and respond to after-hour emergency call-outs.
- Perform water main and service construction and repair, including record keeping;
- Record field activities and makes corrections to system map;
- Perform sewer and storm drain maintenance;
- Operate large trucks, backhoes, and other related equipment;
- and Be available and respond to after-hour emergency call-outs.
Qualifications
- Education: High School diploma or equivalent.
- Experience: Six (6) months experience working with water system operations is preferred, but not required.
- Ability to:
- Work with minimum supervision in the performance of field assignments;
- read water system and substructure maps;
- prepare written reports;
- interpret written and verbal instructions and carry them out;
- interpret technical information with accuracy;
- safely perform physical work (involving ability to lift, carry and/or move objects between 50 to 100 pounds), operate hand held and mobile radios;
- use hand tools;
- analyze and comprehend problems;
- communicate effectively orally and in writing;
- and work with minimum supervision.
- Licenses/Certifications: A valid California Class C Drivers License with the ability to obtain a Commercial Class A or B Driver’s license with Air Breaks and Tank Endorsement within twelve (12) months of appointment if assigned to field operations and acceptable driving record at time of appointment and throughout employment.
- Additional Information: NOTE: In compliance with Federal regulations under the Department of Transportation (DOT), Commercial Driver's License (Class A or B) are subject to the alcohol and drug testing requirements of the Department of Transportation, Federal Highways Administration and will be required to pass an alcohol and drug tests prior to employment. If hired drug and alcohol testing will be administered as follows: post accident; reasonable suspicion; random testing under the DOT; return to work; and follow up testing.
Physical Abilities
- Possess physical mobility, balance, coordination, vision, hearing and dexterity levels appropriate to the duties assigned.
- Ability to drive a City vehicle or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation to travel to different work sites and locations to carry out job-related duties.
- Require the ability to stand for long periods and/or walk long distances.
- Some walking may occur on sloping, slippery and/or uneven surfaces.
- Require the mobility to sit, stand, kneel, crawl, climb, crouch, stoop, reach, and bend.
- Require the ability to twist at the lower body, at the waist, and at the upper body.
- Require the mobility of both arms to reach and dexterity of hands to grasp and manipulate small and large objects or tools, from overhead to the ground positions.
- Perform work which involves grasping, lifting, pushing, pulling, moving and dragging of objects which may weigh approximately 75 pounds and up to 100 pounds.
- Based on job assignment, required to wear protective apparel including hardhats, gloves, goggles, respirators, face protectors, ear protection, aprons, coveralls, chain saw chaps, and steel toed shoes.
- Based on job assignment, may be required to work at heights above ground level.
- Utilities Division job assignments may require work in confined spaces.
- Based on job assignment, may operate power equipment requiring hand, arm, and upper body strength.
- To include the following tools and equipment, and not limited to: electric drills, circular saws, reciprocating saws; pneumatic jackhammers, clay spades, impact wrenches; vibratory plate compactors and rollers; grinders, air compressors, trash pumps, pipe threaders, power drain snakes; rototillers, power trenchers; chain saws, and, hand tools such as shovels, rakes, lutes, hammers, screwdrivers, pliers, wrenches, chisels, scrapers, crowbars, pry-bars, manhole picks, pipe cutters, bench vises.
- May be required to respond to emergency situations.
- Tree trimming job duties may require the ability to climb trees with ropes and climbing harness.
- Based on job assignment, may be exposed to chemicals including but not limited to: gasoline, diesel, motor oil, grease, paint thinner, strippers, solvents, ammonia, bleach, cleansers, volatile organic compounds, fertilizers and non-restricted pesticides.
Selection/Testing Process

- Prior to an employment offer, a comprehensive background investigation is conducted, including fingerprinting. A pre-placement medical exam, including a drug screen will be conducted upon issuance of a conditional offer of employment.
