About the role
The Information Governance (IG) Attorney is an integral part of Latham & Watkins’ IG team. This role advises on information governance issues to ensure the firm’s management of information meets applicable legal, ethical, security, and privacy requirements across all jurisdictions in which the firm operates. The IG Attorney acts as a point of escalation and collaborates with cross-functional teams to develop, maintain, and implement firm-wide policies, procedures, and guidelines related to data management, information security, and artificial intelligence issues.
Responsibilities
- Oversee the daily operation and maintenance of the firm’s internal legal holds and the collection and preservation of documents
- Collaborate with the Office of General Counsel to manage the preservation, collection, and review of documents and electronically stored information for matters involving the firm as a party or custodian
- Work with client facing attorneys to review confidentiality and security obligations in client agreements and outside counsel guidelines to ensure compliance with applicable terms
- Provide internal pre-litigation data management support and coordinate the collection of information in response to discovery requests to the firm
- Advising on client file release requests and coordinating the destruction of information in relation to protective orders, non-disclosure agreements, and applicable retention periods
- Advising on security, privacy, and artificial intelligence (AI) issues, including assisting with the evaluation and implementation of new applications and services
- Develop internal policies, procedures, guidelines, and best practices relating to information governance, including security, privacy, and AI governance issues
- Protect and maintain any highly sensitive, confidential, privileged, financial, and/or proprietary information that Latham & Watkins retains
Qualifications
- Exhibit excellent leadership skills, including organizing, planning, problem solving, and decision making necessary for effective supervision
- Possess knowledge of the concepts, principles, and management of electronically stored information (ESI) as they relate to legal matters, including the use of ESI management and review tools such as Nuix, Relativity, and other applications
- Knowledge of privacy and artificial intelligence laws and regulations
- Demonstrate ability to think creatively and provide strategic support to management and client-facing legal professionals
- A university degree in law, with additional coursework in a technology-related field, preferably a Juris Doctor (J.D.) or Master of Laws (LL.M.) degree from an American Bar Association (ABA)-accredited law school, preferably
- Qualification or licensure to practice law in the jurisdiction in which the candidate resides, or in a jurisdiction where Latham has an office
- A minimum of two (2) years of relevant professional experience, preferably
- Admission to at least one United States state bar
