Ice Rink Operations Lead
Sponsored by the Chico Area Recreation and Park District (CARD), this seasonal, part-time position offers a dynamic leadership role managing facility operations, special events, and seasonal staff at the festive Chico Ice Rink in the Plaza.
About the role
The CARD Ice Rink Operations Lead serves as the senior staff member on duty during assigned shifts, responsible for executing ice rink operations, delivering programs and guest services, and directing seasonal staff in day-to-day tasks. Under the direction of the Recreation Supervisor, this position ensures facility readiness, program delivery, and guest experience standards are met each shift. The Operations Lead works with a high degree of independence during assigned hours and is the primary point of contact for staff, participants, and visitors on site.
Responsibilities
- Maintains operational readiness for the Ice Rink, serving as the lead onsite manager.
- Coordinates setup, maintenance, and daily operation of utilities, restrooms, floormats, lighting, sound systems, and other rink infrastructure.
- Conducts routine facility inspections and coordinates repairs or maintenance needs.
- Ensures facilities, equipment, and operational systems are functioning safely and efficiently, with ability to implement solutions for operational issues in real time.
- Assists with recruitment, hiring, training, scheduling, and supervision of seasonal staff.
- Provides daily leadership, coaching, and performance documentation to Ice Rink team members; escalates formal performance concerns to the supervisor.
- Ensures adequate staffing coverage and oversees schedule adjustments.
- Implements sponsorship activations, field trips, birthday parties, cabana rentals, and private rink reservations.
- Alongside the Event team, supports event logistics and staffing needs for special events, ensuring events are operating safely and efficiently.
- Works closely with all CARD departments to deliver high-quality guest experiences.
- Provides outstanding customer service to participants, guests, community partners, and the public.
Requirements
- Minimum of 2 years of leadership experience in hospitality or recreation programs, including supervisory experience.
- Innate ability to remain calm and steady in stressful situations involving staff and visitors.
- Proficient in computer applications, including training platforms, communication tools, ticketing software, and recreation management software.
- Current CPR/AED and First Aid certifications, or ability to obtain within 90 days of hire.
- Valid California Class C Driver's License with satisfactory driving record; must be insurable on the District's vehicle liability policy.
- Pass a pre-employment background check.

- Excellent communication and facilitation skills, both written and verbal.
- Experience supporting operational programs or community events from planning through execution.
- Familiarity with budgeting, safety procedures, and risk management practices.
- Demonstrated commitment to guest experience with a hospitality-first approach to public-facing work.
Pay
$22.50 - $23.50 per hour
