HVAC Technician

About the Role

Maintains, repairs, and conducts preventive maintenance and installation of air conditioning, heating, ice makers, and refrigeration equipment across Comal ISD facilities. Systems include:

• Air handlers and air distribution systems (dampers, filters, ductwork)
• Screw, scroll, and reciprocating air conditioning systems (direct expansion and chilled water)
• Heat pump systems and local controls
• Walk-in and freestanding coolers/freezers, domestic refrigerators/freezers
• Heating and reheat systems (electric, hot water, gas)
• Air and water balancing of HVAC systems
• Compressed air equipment
• Indoor air quality equipment

Responsibilities

• Ensure effective operation of district HVAC/R systems, including air conditioning, heating, heat pumps, ventilation, refrigeration, and energy recovery equipment.
• Perform preventive maintenance inspections, troubleshoot malfunctions, execute major repairs, and recommend equipment replacement.
• Maintain and repair screw, reciprocating, and scroll air conditioning/refrigeration units (direct expansion, chilled water, centrifugal chillers).
• Service walk-in/freestanding coolers, freezers, refrigerators, and compressed air systems.
• Maintain electric, hot water, and gas-fired reheat/heating systems; clean and service air handlers and filtration systems.
• Repair and maintain HVAC/R electrical systems (motors, controls, contactors, relays, solenoids, transformers).
• Install, modify, troubleshoot, and repair complete HVAC/R systems and components with minimal supervision.
• Ensure compliance with National Electric Code, EPA, UMC, and Texas/San Antonio environmental/refrigeration laws.
• Complete load tests on systems, circuits, equipment, and controls.
• Maintain records of equipment, housekeeping, and safety practices.
• Keep assigned tools, equipment, and district vehicles in serviceable condition.
• Assess work situations independently, determine best methods, and take corrective action following safety practices.
• Consult with HVAC/R Foreman for guidance on work exceeding authorized hours.
• Collaborate with other trades for layout of new or replacement equipment.
• Inspect and approve contractor installations/repairs.
• Recover and dispose of refrigerant per EPA regulations.
• Train and assist other technicians to develop their skills.
• Maintain confidentiality of all information.
• Drive district vehicles as required for assigned tasks.
• Adhere to district policies for records maintenance and retention.
• Perform other assigned duties.

Supervisory Responsibilities

• Supervise and evaluate employees in HVAC and Energy Control Management shops.
• Direct, coordinate, and evaluate unit operations in accordance with organizational policies and applicable laws.
• Interview, recommend for employment, train, assign, and direct work for staff.
• Appraise performance, address complaints, and resolve problems.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or GED (required).
• One-year certificate from college or technical school (preferred).
• Universal Refrigerant Recovery and Handling Certification (required; obtain within 180 days if not held).
• Valid Texas Class “C” Driver’s License with acceptable driving record.
• Minimum 2 years of HVAC/Refrigeration field experience (5 years preferred).
• Personal cell phone for district-related business, including after-hours communication.

Skills

• Average proficiency in computer use and maintenance software; ability to learn new software.
• Moderate proficiency in internet software.
• Ability to apply mathematical concepts (probability, geometry, trigonometry, fractions, percentages, ratios) to practical situations.
• Ability to read and interpret safety rules, operating/maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
• Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.

• Expert knowledge of HVAC/Refrigeration trade practices, diagnostics, and field experience.

• Operational knowledge of repairing/replacing compressors, motors, blower bearings, and related mechanical systems.
• Ability to read project plans and recommend application practices for new/remodeled areas.
• Ability to follow detailed written/oral instructions and handle standardized problems.
• Professional knowledge of HVAC/R equipment for timely diagnosis and repair.
• Familiarity with residential and commercial equipment applications.
