HVAC Helper, Facilities
About the role
The HVAC Helper provides essential support to HVAC Technicians in the maintenance, repair, and installation of heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems across Lipscomb University's campus. This position performs hands-on work assisting with service calls, preventive maintenance, equipment installations, and emergency repairs to ensure reliable operation of climate control systems that support the university's academic mission and residential community.
Primary Responsibilities
- Maintenance and Repair Support
- Aid HVAC Technicians with preventive maintenance on heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration equipment
- Support routine inspections of HVAC systems across campus facilities
- Replace filters, belts, motors, and other components under supervision
- Identify and diagnose equipment malfunctions and system inefficiencies
- Assist with emergency repairs and respond to service calls as directed
- Support seasonal equipment start-ups and shutdowns
- Perform routine cleaning and maintenance of HVAC equipment and mechanical rooms
- Installation and System Work
- Assist with installation of new HVAC equipment and system components
- Help with ductwork installation, modification, and repair
- Support piping work for refrigerant lines, condensate drains, and water systems
- Assist with brazing, soldering, and pipe fitting under supervision
- Assist with equipment rigging, moving, and placement
- Assist with system balancing and commissioning activities
- Support renovation and construction projects requiring HVAC work as needed
- Technical Operations Support
- Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, technical manuals, and work orders
- Assist with testing and adjusting thermostats, dampers, valves, and control systems
- Support refrigerant recovery, recycling, and charging operations under supervision
- Help troubleshoot field-connected devices including controllers and sensors
- Use diagnostic tools, meters, gauges, and testing equipment as directed
- Aid with documentation of system specifications and maintenance records
- Support building automation system operations
- Tools, Equipment, and Facility Support
- Use and maintain hand tools, power tools, and specialized HVAC equipment properly
- Maintain cleanliness and organization of work areas, shop, and service vehicles
- Assist with inventory management of parts, supplies, and materials
- Transport tools, equipment, and materials to job sites
- Maintain personal tools and equipment in good working condition
- Support other trades and facilities staff as needed
- Safety and Compliance
- Follow all safety protocols, procedures, and regulations
- Wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times
- Comply with EPA regulations regarding refrigerant handling
- Participate in safety training and toolbox talks
- Report unsafe conditions and potential hazards immediately
- Maintain a clean and safe work environment
- Operate equipment safely and according to manufacturer specifications
Position Qualifications
- Education: High School Diploma or GED required
- Technical or vocational training in HVAC, mechanical systems, or related field preferred
- Experience: 1-3 years of experience in HVAC, mechanical systems, or related trades preferred
- Previous experience in construction, maintenance, or facilities work beneficial
- Entry-level candidates with strong mechanical aptitude will be considered
- Licensure/Certification: Valid driver's license with clean driving record required
- EPA Section 608 Certification (Universal) preferred or willingness to obtain within 6 months of hire
- Additional certifications beneficial but not required

Working Conditions and Physical Demands
- Work performed in various indoor and outdoor environments across campus
- Exposure to mechanical rooms, rooftops, utility tunnels, crawl spaces, and confined spaces
- Exposure to noise, dust, chemicals, refrigerants, and other HVAC-related materials
- Evening, weekend, and holiday work required as needed
- Participation in on-call rotation for emergency response situations
- Work from elevated platforms, ladders, scaffolding, and aerial lifts
- Exposure to inclement weather conditions
- Physical Demands:
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds
- Capability to work in confined spaces and awkward positions (kneeling, crawling, reaching overhead, bending, stooping)
- Manual dexterity for working with tools and small components
- Ability to stand, walk, climb, and work for extended periods (8+ hours)
- Visual acuity for reading gauges, meters, and technical drawings
- Ability to distinguish colors for wiring and system identification
- Physical stamina for demanding work in challenging environments
- Tolerance for working in hot, cold, dusty, and uncomfortable conditions
- Ability to push, pull, and maneuver heavy equipment

Supervisory Responsibilities
This is a non-supervisory position. The HVAC Helper works under direct supervision of HVAC Technicians and receives guidance from facilities management leadership. Independent judgment: Performs tasks and duties under direct supervision with limited independent judgment. Expected to follow established procedures and seek guidance from supervisors on technical matters. May exercise independent judgment on routine tasks after demonstrating competency.

Position Status
Full-time 40 hours per week with overtime as required.
