About the role

Provides effective management of HR activities for a department of 500 including 30+ faculty, teaching staff, administrative and support staff, and postdocs in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering (DMSE) within the MIT School of Engineering.

Responsibilities

  • Counsels and advises faculty and staff on human resources including personnel policy interpretation and administration, performance management, compensation, and employee relations.
  • Coaches and assists faculty and staff on issues relating to employee relations and conflict resolution.
  • Directs on-boarding and off-boarding processes.
  • Manages rewards and recognition programs.
  • Manages annual salary review processes and departmental searches.
  • Oversees management of visa sponsorship processing in the department.
  • Develops and implements ongoing reporting and tracking processes for DMSE management, including standard operating procedures and staff resource guides (e.g., web-based resources).
  • Generates and collaborates on creative solutions to complex problems, working effectively with various individuals or groups in diverse situations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Minimum of four years of human resources experience.
  • Strong working knowledge of federal, state, and local employment laws, as well as current HR principles and practices.
  • Demonstrated growth mindset, strong follow-through, and commitment to providing excellent customer service.
  • Proven supervisory experience with exceptional interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Ability to take initiative, bring positive energy to the workplace, exercise sound judgment, and maintain a high level of attention to detail.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to manage confidential information with discretion and professionalism.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Adobe Acrobat.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with MIT SAPgui, Quickbase, Cognos, and Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS).
  • Professional certifications such as SPHR or PHR.
