Role Summary

The Sr. Human Resources Generalist is responsible for performing a wide range of HR duties and functions, including onboarding, training and development, employee relations, HRIS administration, and compliance. The SR. HR Generalist works closely with the HR team and other departments, including Health & Safety, to ensure compliance with company policies and procedures; employment and state laws and to provide exceptional customer service to employees.

Key Responsibilities

  • Promote positive employee relations through effective communication, relationship-building, and timely support.
  • Conduct regular meetings with site leaders to discuss team challenges, staffing needs, and organizational goals.
  • Build trust with managers and leaders by maintaining regular communication and understanding business needs.
  • Provide support for employment-related inquiries from applicants, employees, and supervisors, referring complex or sensitive matters to the appropriate HR leader or functional partner.
  • Address employee concerns, assist with conflict resolution, and support a positive employee experience.
  • Administer and support HR programs, including compensation, benefits, leave administration, disciplinary matters, investigations, performance and talent management, recognition, morale, occupational health and safety, and training and development.
  • Partner with HR Benefits Specialist on leave of absence, FMLA, STD, LTD and Paid Parental Leaves.
  • Drive employee recognition programs, engagement activities, and employee service programs that promote and maintain a high level of employee morale.
  • Partner with Health, Safety & Environmental Specialist to support related tasks and adherence to all policies and procedures.
  • Conduct investigations related to accidents and/or incidents to identify causes and recommend corrective actions.
  • Communicate HSE information through meetings, emails, posters, and awareness campaigns.
  • Coordinate emergency preparedness, including fire drills, evacuation procedures, and first aid arrangements.
  • Work with managers and safety committees to address workplace safety concerns and improve safety culture.
  • Work closely with United States Engineering Centers HR team located in Michigan.
  • Support the onboarding process by preparing new employee paperwork, creating employee files, conducting orientation, and coordinating with other departments.
  • Coordinate probationary trial period reviews and annual performance review processes for employees.
  • Manage the offboarding process, including conducting exit interviews and ensuring required documentation is completed.
  • Analyze exit interview data to identify trends and recommend opportunities for improvement.
  • Maintain the HRIS system, ensuring data accuracy, completeness, and timely updates.
  • Maintain accurate employee records and ensure records are retained in accordance with legal and company requirements.
  • Compile data and prepare reports related to HR metrics, including turnover, headcount, staffing levels, and other required reporting.
  • Develop and maintain HRIS documentation, procedures, and user guides.
  • Maintain compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations; recommend best practices and review policies and practices.
  • Adhere to required reporting and manage specific activities related to unemployment, pay transparency, Massachusetts Paid Family & Medical Leave (PFML) and Massachusetts Earned Sick Time.
  • Maintain knowledge of HR trends, best practices, regulatory changes, and new technologies in human resources, talent management, and employment law.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality and data integrity when handling employee information and sensitive matters.
  • Support continual improvement projects and department process reviews.
  • Provide additional support to the Management team and perform other duties as assigned.

Key Qualifications & Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or related field required.
  • SHRM-CP plus.
  • 5 – 8+ years of progressive HR experience, preferably in a generalist role.
  • Ability to work on site in Lowell, MA.
  • Proficiency with or the ability to quickly learn the organization's HRIS and talent management systems.
  • Experience with Workday is a plus.
  • Thorough knowledge and application of employment-related laws and regulations.
  • Familiarity and understanding of Massachusetts state laws is strongly preferred.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software.
  • Working knowledge of multiple human resource disciplines, including general compensation practices, employee relations, diversity, performance management, and federal and respective state employment laws.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to work independently.
  • Ability to travel to Magna facilities (California, Michigan) to support HR activities (5-10%).
  • Excellent time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information.
  • Ability to acquire a thorough understanding of the organization's hierarchy, jobs, qualifications, compensation practices, and administrative practices related to those factors.

Health and Safety Responsibilities

  • Displays a positive attitude towards safety, works safely and follows all the Company's safety policies and procedures.
  • Complies with all Health, Safety and Environmental standards in accordance with the Magna Employee Charter, the Occupational Health & Safety Act, and the state of Massachusetts Occupational Health & Safety Act.
  • Ensures all employees and visitors have a safe environment in that safety and housekeeping standards are maintained; and all hazards, unsafe actions, or unsafe conditions have been identified, corrected, and/or eliminated.
  • Responds to and investigate all reports of injuries, accidents, illnesses, near misses and property damage immediately.
  • Takes an active part in the division's safety program by performing regular workplace inspections, effectively investigating accidents/incidents promptly and assists in meeting or exceeding the division's safety goals.
