About the role
This series exists to provide and preserve a safe and efficient transportation system for the traveling public, while being courteous, considerate, and prompt in serving the public. Positions will be assigned based on experience and qualifications.
This position is eligible for a $4,000 hiring incentive.
Pay
Annual salary range: $37,838 - $50,848
- Highway Operations Worker (Grade 14): $18.19/hour
- Highway Operations Tech 1 (Grade 17): $20.46/hour
- Highway Operations Tech 2 (Grade 18): $22.45/hour
- Highway Operations Tech 3 (Grade 19): $24.44/hour
Responsibilities
- Operation of motorized vehicles and equipment
- Pavement care and preservation
- Landscape care and preservation
- Roadside shoulder restoration and repairs
- Signing and striping of roadways
- Delivery of equipment and materials
- Environmental compliance
- Vehicle and equipment care
Higher-level positions (Highway Operations Tech 2 and 3) also include:
- Scheduling, assigning, and overseeing subordinates' work
- Inspecting work
- Training and guiding staff
Requirements
- Valid driver’s license (required for all positions)
- For Highway Operations Worker: Obtain Arizona CDL (Class “A”) permit within 90 days of hire and full Arizona Class “A” CDL within 6 months of hire
- For Highway Operations Tech 1-3: Arizona Class “A” CDL with (N) tanker endorsement required prior to start date; additional endorsements may be required based on assignment
- Registration with the FMCSA Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse
- Ability to respond to emergency call-outs (24/7) and arrive at the maintenance yard within 30 minutes
- Ability to work in extreme temperatures, rugged terrain, and high-speed traffic conditions
- Ability to lift, carry, push, or pull up to 50 lbs.
- May require licensing through the State Board of Pesticide Control to dispense herbicides/pesticides
- Successful completion of the Electronic Employment Eligibility Verification Program (E-Verify)
Qualifications
- Highway Operations Worker: 6 months of roadway/highway job-related experience (e.g., operating motorized vehicles/heavy-duty equipment, signing/striping, pavement care, roadway operations, tunnel maintenance, or landscape care)
- Highway Operations Tech 1: 1 year of roadway/highway job-related experience
- Highway Operations Tech 2: 2 years of roadway/highway job-related experience
- Highway Operations Tech 3: 3 years of roadway/highway job-related experience
