About the role

This series exists to provide and preserve a safe and efficient transportation system for the traveling public, as well as being courteous, considerate, and prompt in serving the public. Positions will be assigned based on experience and qualifications. This position is eligible for a $4,000 hiring incentive.

Responsibilities

  • Operation of motorized vehicles and equipment
  • Pavement care and preservation
  • Landscape care and preservation
  • Roadside shoulder restoration and repairs
  • Signing and striping of roadways
  • Delivery of equipment and materials
  • Environmental compliance
  • Vehicle and equipment care
  • Scheduling, assigning, and overseeing subordinates’ work (for Tech 2 & 3)
  • Inspecting work, training, and guiding staff (for Tech 2 & 3)

Pay

  • Highway Operations Worker (Grade 14): $18.19/hr ($37,838/yr)
  • Highway Operations Tech 1 (Grade 17): $20.46/hr
  • Highway Operations Tech 2 (Grade 18): $22.45/hr
  • Highway Operations Tech 3 (Grade 19): $24.44/hr ($50,848/yr)

Requirements

  • Highway Operations Worker: 6 months of roadway/highway job-related experience (e.g., operating motorized vehicles and heavy-duty equipment, signing/striping, pavement care, roadway operations, tunnel maintenance, or landscape care)
  • Highway Operations Tech 1: 1 year of roadway/highway job-related experience
  • Highway Operations Tech 2: 2 years of roadway/highway job-related experience
  • Highway Operations Tech 3: 3 years of roadway/highway job-related experience
  • Valid driver’s license; must maintain acceptable driving record and complete required training
  • Highway Operations Worker: Must obtain Arizona CDL (Class “A”) permit within 90 days of hire and full CDL within 6 months
  • Highway Operations Tech 1–3: Arizona Class “A” CDL with (N) tanker endorsement required prior to start date; additional endorsements may be required based on assignment
  • Registration with the FMCSA Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse and authorization for limited queries
  • Ability to respond to emergency call-outs (24/7) and arrive at the maintenance yard within 30 minutes
  • Ability to work in extremes of cold and heat, rugged terrain, and high-speed traffic conditions
  • Ability to lift, carry, push, or pull up to 50 lbs
  • May require licensing through the State Board of Pesticide Control to dispense herbicides/pesticides
  • Successful completion of the Electronic Employment Eligibility Verification Program (E-Verify)
