Highway and Construction Laborer (4,000 Hiring Incentive)

About the Role
This series exists to provide and preserve a safe and efficient transportation system for the traveling public. Positions will be assigned based on experience and qualifications. This position is eligible for a $4,000 hiring incentive.
Pay
- Highway Operations Worker (Grade 14): $18.19/hr ($37,838/yr)
- Highway Operations Tech 1 (Grade 17): $20.46/hr
- Highway Operations Tech 2 (Grade 18): $22.45/hr
- Highway Operations Tech 3 (Grade 19): $24.44/hr ($50,848/yr)
Responsibilities
- Operation of motorized vehicles and equipment
- Pavement care and preservation
- Landscape care and preservation
- Roadside shoulder restoration and repairs
- Signing and striping of roadways
- Delivery of equipment and materials
- Environmental compliance
- Vehicle and equipment care
- Scheduling, assigning, and overseeing subordinates' work (Tech 2 & 3)
- Inspecting work, training, and guiding staff (Tech 2 & 3)
This position responds to emergency call-outs (24/7) and must be able to report to the maintenance yard within 30 minutes. Work may involve extremes of temperature, rugged terrain, high-speed traffic, and considerable time away from home base. Requires lifting/carrying, pushing/pulling up to 50 lbs. May require licensing to dispense herbicides/pesticides.
Requirements
- Highway Operations Worker: 6 months of roadway/highway job-related experience (e.g., operating motorized vehicles/heavy-duty equipment, signing/striping, pavement/landscape care, tunnel maintenance). Must obtain an Arizona CDL (Class “A”) permit within 90 days of hire and a full CDL within 6 months.
- Highway Operations Tech 1: 1 year of roadway/highway experience. Arizona Class “A” CDL (manual/automatic) and (N) tanker endorsement required prior to start.
- Highway Operations Tech 2: 2 years of roadway/highway experience. Arizona Class “A” CDL and (N) tanker endorsement required prior to start.
- Highway Operations Tech 3: 3 years of roadway/highway experience. Arizona Class “A” CDL and (N) tanker endorsement required prior to start.
Additional endorsements may be required based on assignment. Valid driver’s license required for all positions. Employees must maintain acceptable driving records, complete required training, and comply with FMCSA Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse registration.
