Major Responsibilities/Essential Functions
- Affirms compliance with regulatory agencies including TJC, CAP, OSHA, DPH, CLIA.
- Manages staff, assigns work, establishes performance metrics, monitors activities and evaluates performance.
- Maintains accident and incident free conduct of the department operations.
- Maintains a safety and quality perspective for the department.
- Ensures technical clarity with reports and clear communication to customers across a breadth of analytical techniques.
- Provides clinical and technical expertise in support of new initiatives.
- Assists others with and performs lab techniques.
- Manages staff and production to ensure all operations are efficient and cost effective.
- Evaluates operational projects and processes end results to ensure financial and performance objectives are met.
- Contributes to the direction of overall laboratory services.
- Enrolls the laboratory in a CMS-approved proficiency testing program for the tests performed.
- Performs PT samples in accordance with CLIA requirements.
- SUBMIT PT results within the time frames established by the PT program.
- Reviews PT results by the appropriate staff and follows corrective action plans when PT results are found to be unacceptable or unsatisfactory.
- Ensures that the selection, educating, staffing and disciplining of staff members comply with the standards, policies and practices of the organization.
- Evaluates the learning needs of individuals within the department.
- Promotes competency of staff through proper orientation, skill validation and education/training.
- Ensures that departmental files are maintained accurately and completed in compliance with established standards.
- Completes special projects as assigned by management.
Position Summary
The Hematology Supervisor plans and implements the department policies and procedures, and ensures efficient and effective departmental operations, including department quality control and compliance adherence. The Supervisor provides clinical expertise in interpretation of test results as appropriate, including signing out interpretative results. Responsible for communication between laboratory departments and monitoring quality of department operation.
Job Qualifications
- Minimum Education: Bachelor’s degree in Clinical Laboratory Science.
- Minimum Work Experience: 3+ years of laboratory experience.
- Skills or Abilities: Critical analysis and complex problem solving, computer and LIS proficient, maintains current knowledge of regulatory and licensure requirements and ensures compliance with regulations, demonstrates competency in principles of performance improvement, exercises accuracy and precision in completion of prescribed tasks.
- Licenses, Certifications, Registrations or Designations: CLS License (CDPH/ASCP), Current Los Angeles County Fire Card required (within 30 days of hire), Assault Response Competency (ARC) required (within 30 days of hire).
Preferred Work Experience and Qualifications
- Preferred Work Experience: Prior supervisory experience.
- Preferred Qualifications: Strong knowledge in Hematology.
