Healthy Market Food Pantry Worker (Part-time)

About the role
Reporting to the Clinical Director, the Healthy Market Food Pantry Worker performs operational and manual tasks related to receiving, shelving, and organizing packaged, refrigerated, and fresh produce for distribution to students, CCC personnel, and the surrounding community. This role assists in maintaining food inventory records, preparing food orders for the Greater Chicago Food Depository (GCFD), and tracking participation in the Healthy Market Food Pantry. Occasional work outside of normally scheduled hours may be required to accommodate GCFD food deliveries.
Responsibilities
- Stock and organize the food pantry with packaged, refrigerated, and fresh produce to address food insecurity challenges.
- Receive food deliveries from GCFD, including unloading, moving, and unpacking food items for shelving and storage.
- Organize and store goods in compliance with GCFD food safety standards, checking expiration dates.
- Repack bulk food and produce into individual or family packages, boxes, or tote bags for distribution.
- Prepare for food distribution events, including setting up tables and moving items to designated spaces.
- Work with student workers and volunteers to organize and distribute lightweight food items.
- Return leftover food products to storage after events.
- Verify participants complete the one-time Client Enrollment form for GCFD.
- Register and check-in Healthy Market participants, ensuring adherence to visit guidelines and maintaining confidentiality.
- Distribute food to eligible community members and those in need of emergency assistance.
- Respond to inquiries about the Healthy Market Pantry via phone, email, or in person.
- Publicize food distribution events and encourage student participation.
- Maintain food inventory records and place orders with GCFD.
- Provide orientation and guidance to student workers and volunteers.
- Participate in on-site enrollment events each semester for GCFD services.
- Obtain and maintain a Food Handler Certificate.
Requirements
- High School diploma or equivalent (such as HiSET or GED).
- Some food pantry or clerical work experience is desirable.
- Must obtain a Food Services Sanitation Manager Certificate from an approved training program within 60 days of hire.
- Courteous with strong customer service skills.
- Good verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to stock and distribute food items efficiently and maintain records.
- Basic computer skills and familiarity with Microsoft Office.
- Ability to work in a culturally diverse environment.
- Must be able to lift and carry up to 30 lbs, including bending, carrying, unloading, and moving food items.
Pay
$17 per hour. Offered salary will be determined by the respective collective bargaining agreement and applicant's education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities.
