PRN position at Atrium Health Cabarrus & Concord locations in the greater Charlotte area. Spanish healthcare interpreters preferably have a minimum of 40 hours of medical interpreter training and live within approximately 30 miles of the locations.
Qualifications
- High school diploma required; bachelor's degree preferred
- 1-year related experience required
- Knowledge of medical terminology and prior experience in a healthcare setting is required
- National medical interpreter certification preferred
- Demonstrated knowledge of oral/written language pair competency by successful completion of an Interpreter Language Assessment required
- Completion of 40-hour Medical Interpretation Training Program within 1 year of hire required
Responsibilities
- Proactively responds to requests for language access in a healthcare setting, including in-person, telephone, and video interpreting, as well as basic translation
- Leverages technology to deliver services in various modalities and troubleshoots basic application issues
- Maintains relationships with internal customers, makes key decisions on interpreter modalities, and strives to contain costs
- Interprets information regarding patients' and families' healthcare needs, such as patient education, appointments, discharge instructions, procedures, and emergency encounters
- Serves as a conduit for accurate and concise interpretation, considering cultural implications and idiomatic language differences
- Acts as a cultural broker by educating caregivers on patients' cultural contexts in relation to healthcare
- Fully abides by professional conduct standards, executes duties ethically, and follows national practice standards
- Translates basic written information as needed within department guidelines
- Serves as a cultural mediator and educates customers appropriately
Physical Requirements
- Requires walking, standing, sitting, lifting, and reaching
- Must lift a minimum of 10 pounds to shoulder height
- Must speak English and a foreign language clearly and understandably
- Must have an intact sense of sight and hearing
- Must be mobile throughout the entire healthcare system
- Must be able to deliver language access via in-person, telephone, and video remote modalities
