Hatchery Maintenance I
About the role
This position is responsible for managing all aspects of general maintenance function to ensure safe working conditions and to meet or exceed regulatory compliance in the Elkmont Hatchery. Partners with the management team to create and maintain a safe work environment.
Responsibilities
- Perform basic mechanical repairs at our Hatchery including plumbing, lighting, heating, air conditioning, etc.
- Check, install, and repair equipment, which includes controllers, watering systems, ventilation systems, generators, wells and septic systems.
- Repair wooden structures, work with chicken wire, replace electrical and plumbing fixtures, cut Plexiglas to fit aluminum frames, routine maintenance on buildings, grease equipment, check to ensure equipment is operating properly and repair if needed, work with PVC waterline and fittings, install cat6 wiring.
- Clean up work area after a shift.
- Any other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Basic knowledge of carpentry, plumbing, flooring, masonry, electrical, welding, roofing, machinery, mechanics, heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC).
- Must be able to use basic hand tools.
- Must be able to read, understand, and follow task specific instructions, such as Lock-out/Tag-out procedures.
- Must be a team player with strong verbal skills and a positive attitude.
Physical Requirements
- A person in this position is expected to walk/stand for extended periods.
- Ability to use measuring tools and measure precisely for cutting with power and/or hand tools.
- Ability to move safely over uneven terrain.
- Frequently carry/lift objects and equipment weighting up to 40 lbs., including lumber and metal building materials.
- Ability to perform repetitive tasks that require hand/wrist dexterity.
- Ability to work from aerial lift w/fall restraint system at around 20 ft.
- Ability to safely pick up materials stored at ground level.
- Ability to apply 50 lbs. of force to push carts.
- Ability to frequently kneel/squat.
- Ability to conduct repetitive tasks.
- Ability to use both fixed and portable ladders (step and/or extension ladders).
- Utilize a variety of tools, including, but not limited to, drills, hammers, saws, metal grinders, blowtorches, and welders.
- Tools used mainly consist of power tools, but some hand tools are also used.
- Ability to wear required personal protective equipment for identified tasks, such as ear muffs, ear plugs, safety glasses, welding helmets, work gloves, work boots, harness, etc.
- Ability to drive.
Work Conditions
- Exposed at times to airborne particles, such as dust and dander.
- Exposed to various noise levels, sometimes exceeding the 85-dBA action level set by OSHA. Proper PPE hearing protection will be provided in these areas.
- Exposure to chemicals, such as detergents, and disinfectants.
- May be exposed to very hot temperatures, very cold temperatures.
- Exposed to farm related smells and foul odors.
