Groundman - Underground
About the role
The Underground Groundman is an entry-level position responsible for the construction, maintenance, and repair of electrical underground distribution systems. This position involves working at various locations and may require occasional travel to another state based on customer demands.
Responsibilities
- Set up pad mount transformers.
- Work safely around energized high voltage systems.
- Maintain company vehicles, equipment, and tools.
- Perform rigorous physical labor.
- Use company radio and understand basic rigging, hand lines, and lineman knot tying.
- Operate and maintain hand tools.
- Receive and follow directions.
- Identify primary and secondary voltage on circuits.
- Understand induced voltage and assist with transformer installation and hook-up.
- Perform basic bucket rescue/escape.
- Understand equipment setup, grounding, and minimum approach distance.
- Inspect and check voltage on transformers, install/remove service, and properly inspect rubber goods and PPE.
- Climb different types of structures and use necessary tools.
- Work in underground trenches and manholes.
- Identify different types of materials used in line work.
- Work outside in various weather conditions.
- Willing to work live high voltage distribution lines.
- Perform other related work as required.
Requirements
- No prior experience necessary.
- Able to read and communicate effectively in English.
- Able to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License permit within 60 days of employment.
- A Commercial Driver’s License is preferred.
- Able to travel long distances on short notice.
- Able to work for extended periods in various locations.
- Able to lift in excess of 50 lbs.
- Able to properly inspect rubber goods and PPE.
- Willing to work over-time and outside of the normal work schedule, including weekends, holidays, and overtime.
Qualifications
- Basic knowledge of materials used in line work.
- Familiarity with induced voltage.
- Ability to identify primary and secondary voltage on circuits.
- Understanding of minimum approach distance.
- Understanding of excavation and shoring requirements.
- Understanding of equipment setup and grounding.
- Ability to work at heights and/or confined spaces.
- Ability to check voltage on transformers.
- Ability to install and remove a service.
- Ability to properly inspect rubber goods and PPE.
- Willingness to work in various weather conditions and perform live work.
