Groundman - Underground - A - GA (AP)
About the role
The Underground Groundman is an entry-level position responsible for the construction, maintenance, and repair of electrical underground distribution systems. This role involves working at various locations and may require occasional travel to another state based on customer demands.
Responsibilities
- Set up pad mount transformers.
- Work safely around energized high voltage systems.
- Maintain company vehicles, equipment, and tools.
- Perform rigorous physical labor.
- Operate company radio and understand basic rigging and knot tying.
- Use and maintain hand tools.
- Receive and follow directions.
- Identify primary and secondary voltage on circuits.
- Understand induced voltage and assist with transformer installation and hook-up.
- Perform basic bucket rescue/escape.
- Understand equipment setup and grounding.
- Work at heights and confined spaces.
- Check voltage on transformers and install/remove service.
- Inspect rubber goods and personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Work in underground trenches and manholes.
- Identify different types of materials used in line work.
- Work outside, including in inclement weather.
- Willing to work live high voltage distribution lines.
- Perform other related tasks as required.
Requirements
- No prior experience necessary.
- Able to read and communicate effectively in English.
- Able to obtain a Commercial Driver's License permit within 60 days of employment.
- A Commercial Driver's License is preferred.
- Able to travel long distances on short notice.
- Able to work for extended periods in various locations.
- Able to lift in excess of 50 lbs.
- Able to properly inspect rubber goods and PPE.
- Willing to work over-time and outside of the normal work schedule, including weekends, holidays, and overtime.
Qualifications
- Basic knowledge of materials used in line work.
- Familiarity with induced voltage.
- Ability to identify primary and secondary voltage on circuits.
- Understanding of minimum approach distance and excavation/shoring requirements.
- Knowledge of equipment setup and grounding.
- Ability to work at heights and confined spaces.
- Ability to check voltage on transformers and install/remove service.
- Ability to properly inspect rubber goods and PPE.
- Willingness to work in various weather conditions and perform live work.
