Groundman - Underground (GP)

About the role

The Underground Groundman is an entry-level position responsible for the construction, maintenance, and repair of electrical underground distribution systems. This position involves working at various locations and may require travel to another state based on customer demands.

Responsibilities

• Set up pad mount transformers.
• Work safely around energized high voltage systems.
• Maintain company vehicles, equipment, and tools.
• Perform rigorous physical labor.
• Use company radio and understand basic rigging and hand lines.
• Understand and use hand tools.
• Receive and follow directions.
• Identify primary and secondary voltage on circuits.
• Understand induced voltage and assist with transformer installations.
• Perform basic bucket rescue/escape.
• Understand equipment setup and grounding.
• Work at heights and confined spaces.
• Inspect voltage on transformers.
• Install and remove service.
• Inspect and wear personal protective equipment (PPE).
• Climb different types of structures.
• Work in underground trenches and manholes.
• Identify different types of materials used in line work.
• Work outside, including in inclement weather.
• Willing to work over-time and overtime as required.

Requirements

• No prior experience necessary.
• Able to read and communicate effectively in English.
• Able to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License permit within 60 days of employment.
• A Commercial Driver’s License is preferred.
• Able to travel long distances on short notice.
• Able to work for extended periods in various locations.
• Able to lift in excess of 50 lbs.
• Able to properly inspect rubber goods and PPE.
• Willing to work over-time and outside of the normal work schedule.

Qualifications

• Basic knowledge of materials used in line work.
• Familiarity with induced voltage.
• Ability to install and remove a service.
• Understanding of minimum approach distance and excavation/shoring requirements.
• Knowledge of bucket rescue/escape techniques.
• Understanding of equipment setup and grounding.
• Ability to work at heights and confined spaces.
• Ability to check voltage on transformers.
• Ability to identify different types of materials used in line work.
• Ability to work outside, including in inclement weather.
• Willingness to work over-time and overtime as required.
