Duties And Responsibilities

  • Deliver engaging classroom and hands-on training sessions in topics including (but not limited to) First Aid, CPR, AED, Forklift Operations, and other general workplace safety areas.
  • Prepare course materials, equipment, and instructional aids to support high-quality training experiences.
  • Maintain accurate attendance, certification, and training records in accordance with college and regulatory standards.
  • Evaluate student performance through observation, assessments, and feedback.
  • Assist in the development and revision of safety course content to meet industry and community needs.
  • Ensure training environments, labs, and equipment remain safe, functional, and compliant with safety standards.
  • Collaborate with Workforce & Community Education staff to coordinate course scheduling and support special training events.
  • Stay current on safety practices, instructional methods, and relevant certifications through ongoing professional development.
  • Other duties as assigned in response to a rapidly changing environment.

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

  • Strong knowledge of workplace safety standards, hazard prevention, and emergency response best practices.
  • Skill in delivering hands-on safety training (First Aid, CPR, AED, forklift operation) using clear demonstrations and real-world scenarios.
  • Effective verbal communication, presentation, and public speaking skills to engage adult learners.
  • Knowledge of adult learning principles with the ability to adapt instruction to varied experience levels and learning styles.
  • Strong organizational skills to manage class scheduling, materials, and certification documentation.
  • Ability to assess participant performance and provide coaching to support skill mastery and certification success.
  • Ability to collaborate with college departments, local employers, and community partners to address workforce safety needs.
  • Commitment to maintaining compliance with credentialing organizations and applicable safety regulations.
  • Ability to maintain a safe training environment, including risk identification and mitigation during demonstrations.
  • Proficiency with instructional technology and multimedia tools to enhance learning engagement and course delivery.

Purpose And Scope

The Southeast New Mexico College (SENMC) seeks an energetic, knowledgeable General Safety Instructor to provide high-quality safety training to students, local businesses, and community partners. This position focuses on delivering hands-on instruction in essential workplace safety areas such as First Aid, CPR, AED, Forklift Operations, and general occupational safety practices. The instructor will promote a strong culture of safety awareness and empower participants with the practical skills and certifications needed to work safely and effectively.

Background Information

Located in Carlsbad, New Mexico, Southeast New Mexico College (SENMC) is a newly independent public community college accredited by the Higher Learning Commission. A proud Hispanic Serving Institution, it awards certificates and associate degrees that serve the needs of its region and prepare students to transfer to programs at other colleges or universities. SENMC offers Early College and Dual Credit programs in collaboration with local high schools. The college enjoys the strong support of its community, and has been awarded several grants, which include $11.7 million from the U.S. Department of Energy and several multimillion-dollar grants from the U.S. Department of Education for student support.
