Under direction of the school principal and special education supervisor, the special education teacher provides direct instruction and instructional support to students with disabilities and works in collaboration with the general education teacher. Monitors and evaluates outcomes for students with disabilities. Assists in the development of Individualized Education Programs (IEP).
Responsibilities
- Provide direct instruction and instructional support to students with disabilities.
- Collaborate with general education teachers.
- Monitor and evaluate outcomes for students with disabilities.
- Assist in the development of Individualized Education Programs (IEP).
- Attend school meetings, programs, and activities outside the instructional day as mandated by the Montgomery County Education Association agreement.
- Support behavioral interventions, including nonviolent crisis interventions.
- Adapt instructional programs and materials appropriately.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in special education.
- Fluent in learning theory, differentiated instruction, developmental reading, child development, applied behavior analysis, and assessment.
- Student teaching in the specific area of exceptionality or two years of teaching experience at the appropriate level (elementary or secondary).
- Meets Maryland State Department of Education certification requirements for Standard Professional Certification I (SPC I) in special education.
- Certification in a content area is desirable.
- Successful completion of specific courses provided by MCPS for behavioral management and nonviolent crisis interventions (required for teachers in special education schools or discrete special education service models).
Skills
- Knowledge of MCPS curriculum for the grade/content range of the position and MCPS special education program.
- Thorough knowledge of IEP, learning theory, differentiated instruction, data collection, best instructional practices, research-based reading instruction, multicultural education, and assessments.
- Knowledge of methods of teaching elementary math (if seeking an elementary position).
- Understanding of Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA 2015), Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA 2004), and state and federal policies related to special education.
- Ability to provide instructional support and adapt instructional programs and materials.
- Strong communication skills and ability to work well with students, teachers, and parents/guardians.
- Knowledge and ability to apply the six performance standards established for the MCPS Teacher Professional Growth System (TPGS).

- This is a temporary position that does not include benefits.
- Full-time, 10-month schedule (working months).
- Day shift.
- Assigned to Gaithersburg High School.
