About the Role

Under the direction of the school principal and special education supervisor, the special education teacher provides direct instruction and instructional support to students with disabilities and collaborates with the general education teacher. Responsibilities include monitoring and evaluating outcomes for students with disabilities, and assisting in the development of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).

Teachers employed in special education schools or discrete special education service models must successfully complete specific courses provided by MCPS, including behavioral management and nonviolent crisis interventions. Teachers in these identified schools and programs will be required to support behavioral interventions.

This is a Temporary Part-Time (TPT) position working 10 months per year on a full-time, day-shift schedule at Stonegate Elementary School in Silver Spring.

Responsibilities

• Provide direct instruction and instructional support to students with disabilities.
• Collaborate with general education teachers to adapt and implement instructional programs.
• Monitor and evaluate outcomes for students with disabilities.
• Assist in the development and implementation of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).
• Attend school meetings, programs, and activities outside the instructional day as required.
• Support behavioral interventions, including nonviolent crisis interventions, as needed.
• Apply differentiated instruction, data collection, and research-based practices in teaching.
• Adapt instructional materials and programs to meet the needs of students with disabilities.
• Communicate effectively with students, teachers, and parents/guardians.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in special education or a related field.
• Fluent knowledge of learning theory, differentiated instruction, developmental reading, child development, applied behavior analysis, and assessment.
• Student teaching in the specific area of exceptionality or two years of teaching experience at the appropriate level (elementary or secondary).
• Meets Maryland State Department of Education certification requirements for Standard Professional Certification I (SPC I) in special education.
• Certification in a content area is desirable.
• Knowledge of MCPS curriculum, special education programs, and federal/state policies (e.g., ESSA 2015, IDEA 2004).
• Ability to apply the six performance standards of the MCPS Teacher Professional Growth System (TPGS).

Skills

• Thorough understanding of IEPs, learning theory, and differentiated instruction.
• Proficiency in data collection, best instructional practices, and research-based reading instruction.
• Knowledge of multicultural education and assessments.
• Strong communication and collaboration skills.
• Ability to adapt instructional programs and materials for students with disabilities.
• Experience with behavioral management and nonviolent crisis interventions (preferred).

Pay

The wage range for this assignment is between $18.00 and $35.00 per hour, depending on factors such as the nature of the project, prior experience in MCPS, and current negotiated agreements.
