Job Overview

We are seeking an experienced Fractional Chief Financial Officer (CFO) to support nonprofit organizations with high-level financial leadership, strategic insight, and nonprofit accounting practices. This position plays a key role in the Thrive Nonprofit Partners Client Services Team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Understand the mission and goals of our clients in order to provide strategic financial leadership.
  • Establish authentic and meaningful relationships with the Senior/Executive Pastor, Director, Board, and leadership team centered on trust, honesty and expertise.
  • Prepare financial analysis/dashboards to lead discussions with clients that enable them to make data-driven decisions for weeks, months, and years in advance. Examples include cash flow models, financial statement projections, funding models, scenario planning, etc.
  • Maintain clear communication of progress and deliverables using tools for project tracking to ensure alignment with client expectations and processes.
  • Assess and optimize financial systems, workflows, and technology to increase efficiency and strengthen internal controls.
  • Collaborate with and provide guidance to internal finance teams or outsourced bookkeeping providers to improve accounting and processes.
  • Evaluate and recommend best practices in financial reporting, cash management, and internal control procedures.
  • Strengthen nonprofit accounting practices in accordance with GAAP and regulatory requirements.
  • Ensure proper accounting, grant management, and restricted/unrestricted fund tracking.
  • Support clients in budget preparation, audit preparation and year end close through collaboration with finance teams.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, or related field.
  • Experience in controller, CFO, Fractional CFO or similar consultant work.
  • Aligned values with the clients we serve in the nonprofit sector, mainly churches and ministries.
  • Proficiency in financial software (e.g., Blackbaud, QuickBooks, Excel) and the ability to learn new tools.
  • Demonstrated ability to quickly learn and leverage new software (and AI-assisted tools) to improve efficiency to deliver high-quality client service.
  • Excellence in communication and building trusted relationships.

Preferred Skills

  • Experience working in or with nonprofit organizations.
  • Having a CPA or CMA designation is a plus but not required.
  • Familiarity with financial compliance and reporting standards for nonprofits.
