Fractional CFO
Meyer Wilson Werning stands as a formidable force in the realm of investor claims and class actions, recognized nationally for its relentless pursuit of justice. With over $350 million recovered for clients and accolades from leading attorney rating services, our firm has established a legacy of excellence. As a niche law firm with a nationwide practice focused exclusively in investor claims and mass/class actions, Meyer Wilson Werning operates with a deep commitment to protecting the rights of investors and consumers.
About the role
The Fractional CFO role at Meyer Wilson Werning exists to provide the strategic financial leadership the firm currently does not have in-house. This is not a full-time CFO role, and it is not a bookkeeping or day-to-day accounting position. The firm already has a trusted Office Administrator/Bookkeeper who manages day-to-day financial operations, along with an external CPA firm that handles tax preparation. The need is for a sophisticated financial professional who can help firm leadership interpret clean, reliable financial data, improve budgeting and forecasting, create digestible reporting, analyze profitability, identify operational inefficiencies, and support proactive financial decision-making.
Because Meyer Wilson Werning operates on a plaintiff-side contingency-fee model, the right candidate must understand the challenge of variable revenue, no recurring revenue, no traditional accounts receivable, long case timelines, and cash flow planning around major case wins or losses.
Responsibilities
- Provide high-level financial strategy and advisory support to help the firm make proactive business decisions.
- Build budgeting and forecasting processes that reflect the realities of a contingency-fee law firm with variable monthly revenue.
- Help firm leadership understand monthly operating needs, payroll stability, cash flow timing, and the impact of case wins or losses.
- Translate existing financial data into clear, digestible, executive-level reports that the firm owner and Office Administrator/Bookkeeper can use for decision-making.
- Analyze operating expenses, profit margins, spending patterns, and opportunities to improve efficiency.
- Help leadership plan around revenue variability, major case outcomes, tax considerations, and future financial needs.
- Work with the external CPA firm to identify tax planning opportunities and support more strategic tax-related decision-making.
- Create dashboards, KPIs, or reporting frameworks that give leadership better visibility into firm performance.
- Assess current tools, including Litify, Accounting Seed, Excel, and existing reporting processes, then recommend practical improvements where needed.
- Work directly with the firm owner and Office Administrator/Bookkeeper as the third member of the firm’s financial leadership structure.
Requirements
- Prior experience as a Fractional CFO or senior finance leader advising business owners, ideally small to medium size law firms.
- Strong preference for experience with plaintiff-side contingency-fee law firms or professional services businesses with variable revenue.
- Strong background in financial strategy, budgeting, forecasting, cash flow modeling, profitability analysis, and executive reporting.
- Ability to explain financial information clearly, translate data into recommendations, and help leadership make proactive decisions.
- Able to handle confidential financial information with professionalism and trustworthiness.
- Comfortable working with clean financial data and turning it into practical business insight.
- Experience with Excel and financial reporting tools required; familiarity with Litify and Accounting Seed is strongly preferred but not required.
- Best suited for someone who enjoys strategic advisory work rather than transactional bookkeeping or routine accounting tasks.
- Must be comfortable with a true fractional engagement of approximately 10–15 hours per month, with potentially more involvement during onboarding.
Benefits
- Engage in a role that offers significant strategic influence and an opportunity to shape the financial direction of the firm.
- Collaborate directly with firm leadership to drive impactful financial strategies.
- Enjoy the flexibility of a fractional role designed to accommodate other professional pursuits.
- Leverage clean, reliable financial data to quickly add value and make measurable impacts.
- Fully remote position, allowing flexibility and work-life balance.
- Structured as a monthly retainer for defined hours, offering stable and predictable income.
- Access to referrals through a vast network of law firms, enhancing career opportunities.
- Competitive pay tailored to market standards for fractional CFO roles.
Schedule
This is a fractional engagement of approximately 10–15 hours per month, with potentially more involvement during onboarding.
