About the role

The City of St. George Fleet Department is seeking a Fleet Master Technician to join our dedicated team. This role involves diagnosing, maintaining, and repairing a wide range of vehicles, including emergency vehicles, transit buses, trucks, and automobiles.

Responsibilities

  • Diagnose, repair, and maintain diesel, gasoline, and various types of vehicles.
  • Perform major engine overhauls, adjust computer command controls, and replace defective parts.
  • Use sophisticated computer testing equipment to diagnose drivetrain and exhaust after treatment components.
  • Fabricate specialized equipment and lay out, cut, and fit material for welding.
  • Perform state safety inspections and upfit vehicles with extensive electrical and computer software knowledge.
  • Complete preventive maintenance for all City equipment and vehicles, such as lubrication and oil changes.
  • Install and repair multiplex data systems using laptop computer technology.
  • Provide on-the-job training and mentorship to Journey Technicians and Apprentices.
  • Assist the shop supervisor in scheduling and supervising Fleet Technicians.

Requirements

  • Minimum of eight (8) years full-time experience in automotive, diesel, or heavy equipment repair.
  • Thorough knowledge and practical experience wiring complete electrical systems and diagnosing complex CAN/multiplexing networks on modern passenger vehicles and light-duty trucks.
  • Master ASE certification within six (6) months of hire.
  • A valid Utah Commercial (Class B) Driver License within six (6) months of hire.
  • State safety inspection certification within six (6) months of employment.
  • Refrigerant recovery and recycling certification within six (6) months of employment.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Relevant post-secondary education or a vocational degree in Automotive/Diesel technology may substitute for up to two years of required experience on a year-for-year basis.
  • Must supply own hand tools and rollaway to perform duties as required.

Skills

  • Knowledge and expertise in performing highly specialized maintenance.
  • Ability to safely operate all City equipment.
  • Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of electrical, hydraulic, and fuel systems; pumps; gas, natural gas, and diesel engines; cooling systems; up-fit wiring; and transmissions.
  • Knowledge of OBDII system and CAN system.
  • Knowledge of multiplex data systems using laptop computer technology.
  • Ability to determine causes of operating errors and decide proper action to correct errors.
  • Ability to determine when and what kind of maintenance is needed and perform routine maintenance on equipment.
  • Ability to install equipment, machines, wiring, or programs to meet specifications.
  • Ability to efficiently operate fleet software programs.
  • Ability to read and analyze data and apply strategies based on the diagnostics to repair air bag deployment system, vehicle anti-lock brake system, electronic fuel injection, air conditioning, hydraulic systems, and diesel systems, etc. on light and heavy vehicles.
  • Ability to evaluate vehicle safety needs and exercise independent judgment to ensure reliable vehicle performance.
  • Ability to understand and comply with all OSHA regulations.
  • Ability to read and write in English at a business level.
  • Ability to understand and explain complex wiring schematics.
