Description
Maintains and repairs City vehicles and equipment. Work may include as assigned: preventative maintenance and repair; inspecting and documenting repair/maintenance needs; updating vehicle maintenance records; performing quality control for vendor repairs; consulting technical references such as service and parts manuals for technical information; conducting state inspections; assisting with training for less experienced staff; and complying with safety rules and regulations.
Responsibilities
- Performs scheduled/unscheduled maintenance and repairs on City vehicles, equipment, and rolling stock including performing preventative maintenance checks and tire service.
- Diagnose and repair difficult drivability problems; diagnose and repair electronic systems; inspect and repair comebacks; repair, replace, and install parts, as needed.
- Provide assistance and training to less experienced staff.
- Perform road/service calls as necessary. Requests parts. Updates fleet management database.
- Responds to management and customer inquiries.
Requirements
- Class diagnoses and repairs complex problems, performs tasks requiring advanced mechanical knowledge and skill, functions as lead person in coordinating activities of technicians and assistants, and may act as Team Leader, providing customer service, assigning work and monitoring completion, when required.
- Must be able to lift or move up to 100 lbs.; maneuver up to 1 mile; must be able to crawl, climb, operate medium equipment and work with large and small objects; must possess good communications skills and functionally normal hearing.
Qualifications
- High school diploma/GED and seven years’ experience in the repair of automotive equipment, or equivalent combination of experience and documented successful completion of training courses in automotive repair from a community college, vocational school, or automotive dealer/retailer (including significant training in electronics and computerized engine controls).
- Refrigerant license, ASE certification in at least 4 areas or obtained within 12 months of start date.
- CDL B or obtain within 12 months of start date.
- Must have a complete set of hand tools.
Desirable Qualifications
- Two years of college preferred.
- Welding/fabrication skills.
- ASE Master certified.

- Physical Requirements: Must be able to lift or move up to 100 lbs.; maneuver up to 1 mile; must be able to crawl, climb, operate medium equipment and work with large and small objects; must possess good communications skills and functionally normal hearing. This position will work both indoors and outdoors and may be exposed to cold, heat, changing weather, adverse smells and sights, loud sounds and long periods of standing.

Typical Qualifications
- Do you have experience in the repair of automotive equipment?
- Do you possess a valid North Carolina Commercial Driver's License (NC CDL Class A or B), or the ability to obtain it within 12 months of start date?
- Do you have a complete set of hand tools?
- Do you have the ability to work 12-hour shifts, 7 days a week during ice & snow events and/or emergency operations?
