Position Summary

The Fleet Manager oversees the maintenance and repair operations for a variety of Class 8 commercial vehicles and specialized equipment, ensuring compliance with DOT, FMCSA, OSHA, and environmental regulations. Reporting to the Corporate Fleet Manager, this role also involves managing outside vendors and service providers, evaluating shop productivity metrics, and training mechanics.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee maintenance and repair operations for Class 8 commercial vehicles, including front-load, rear-load, roll-off, automated side-load, and specialized vocational equipment
  • Ensure proper diagnosis, repair, and preventative maintenance of diesel engines, transmissions, drivetrains, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, brake systems, suspension components, and emission control systems
  • Develop and monitor preventative maintenance schedules to maximize fleet reliability and minimize downtime
  • Review repair orders, work quality, labor efficiency, and parts utilization to ensure cost-effective maintenance operations
  • Maintain compliance with DOT, FMCSA, OSHA, and environmental regulations relating to fleet maintenance operations
  • Coordinate emergency repairs and equipment recovery efforts as necessary
  • Manage outside vendors and service providers to ensure quality repairs and competitive pricing
  • Evaluate shop productivity metrics, vehicle availability, maintenance costs, and downtime trends to drive continuous improvement
  • Supervise mechanics and operational support staff

Skills and Knowledge Requirements

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree (accredited) or equivalent, with 6+ years of relevant work experience
  • Experience: Minimum 5 years of progressively responsible fleet maintenance experience with Class 8 trucks, heavy-duty diesel engines, hydraulic systems, and vocational equipment, including at least 3 years in a supervisory or management capacity
  • Certifications/Licenses: Valid CDL A driver’s license with a clean driving record preferred, extensive knowledge of DOT inspection requirements, compliance standards, and maintenance recordkeeping
  • Knowledge: Extensive knowledge of Class 8 trucks, heavy-duty diesel engines, hydraulic systems, vocational truck equipment, preventative maintenance programs, diagnostic procedures, and fleet safety practices
  • Skills: Good organizational skills, ability to work independently, ability to handle objects weighing up to 30 pounds, occasional exposure to physical occupational risks, occasional exposure to physical environments involving dirt, odors, noise, weather extremes or similar elements

Physical Requirements

  • Required to use motor coordination with finger dexterity (such as keyboarding, machine operation, tools etc.) most of the workday
  • Required to exert physical effort in handling objects more than 30 pounds
  • Occasional exposure to physical occupational risks (such as cuts, burns, exposure to toxic chemicals, etc.)
  • Occasional exposure to physical environment which involves dirt, odors, noise, weather extremes or similar elements
