Opportunity for current students to gain hands-on experience in fleet maintenance and repair while working with a variety of vehicles and equipment, from pickup trucks to heavy machinery like dozers and backhoes.
Responsibilities
- Perform inspections on vehicles and equipment entering the shop.
- Support Shop Technicians with maintenance and repair of heavy equipment used in highway and bridge construction.
- Assist with preparing vehicles for sale (equipment decommissioning) and new vehicles for service (equipment make-ready).
- Prepare pool vehicles for use by conducting inspections, preventive maintenance, washing/cleaning, and verifying safety features (e.g., first aid kits, fire extinguishers, mobile radios).
- Complete repair order documentation and enter information into the fleet information management system.
- Pick up parts from local vendors and shuttle vehicles/equipment to and from vendors.
- Perform plant and landscape maintenance, comfort station upkeep, rights-of-way maintenance, minor equipment repair, and assist with roadway repair.
- Follow specific instructions and receive frequent supervision.
Requirements
- Must be at least 16 years of age and a current student enrolled in high school, college, university, or a trade/vocational school.
- Employees at least 18 years old with a valid driver’s license may be assigned driving duties and may use power tools.
- No prior experience required; experience can be satisfied by full-time or part-time work.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience using hand and power tools, equipment, and mechanical devices of the trade.
- Knowledge of mechanical repair procedures for diesel and gasoline engines.
- Ability to diagnose and repair electronic and mechanical components/subsystems according to defined codes and specifications.
- Proficiency with computers and Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word).
- Experience troubleshooting, repairing, and calibrating electronic and mechanical systems.
- Knowledge of brake repairs, including antilock, mechanical, air, and hydraulic brake systems.
- Diagnostic skills with automotive and diesel computer applications.
Skills

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
- Required to wear personal protective equipment (safety shirt/vest, eye protection, hard hat, gloves, etc.).
- Exposure to noise, extreme cold (below 32°F), and extreme heat (above 100°F) for extended periods.
- Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs.
- Frequent kneeling and bending.
Conditions of Employment
- This position is identified as physically demanding and requires a pre-employment physical.
- Must pass a drug test prior to employment (this is a Safety Impact position subject to random drug testing).
