Fleet Equipment Mechanic Intern - Fleet Operations Division

About the role

Performs entry-level and routine maintenance work involving physical labor tasks such as plant and landscape maintenance, maintenance of comfort stations and rights-of-way, minor equipment repair, and assisting with roadway repair. Employees at this level perform assignments following specific instructions and are subject to frequent review by the immediate supervisor.

This internship offers an opportunity for current students to gain marketable experience maintaining and repairing a variety of vehicles and equipment, from small vehicles like pickup trucks and SUVs to heavy equipment such as dozers, loaders, and backhoes. You will work alongside seasoned mechanics, receive classroom and hands-on training, and have opportunities for advancement into full-time positions. TxDOT provides all necessary diagnostic, hand, and power tools—no personal tools required.

As part of the TxDOT team, you will contribute to maintaining approximately 13,000 assets critical to daily operations and emergency response, including hurricanes and other weather events.

Responsibilities

• Perform inspections on vehicles and equipment entering the shop.
• Support Shop Technicians with maintenance and repair of heavy equipment used in highway and bridge construction and maintenance.
• Assist with preparing vehicles for sale (equipment decommissioning).
• Assist with preparing new vehicles and equipment for service (equipment make-ready).
• Prepare pool vehicles for use by performing inspections, preventive maintenance, washing/cleaning, and checking for required safety features (e.g., first aid kits, fire extinguishers, mobile radios).
• Complete repair order documentation and enter information into the fleet information management system.
• Pick up parts from local vendors as needed.
• Shuttle vehicles and equipment to and from vendors.
• Perform other job responsibilities as assigned.

Requirements

• Must be at least 16 years of age and a current student enrolled in high school, trade/vocational school, college, or university.
• Employees at least 18 years of age with a valid driver’s license may be assigned driving duties and may use power tools.
• Must pass a pre-employment physical and drug test (this is a Safety Impact position subject to random drug testing).
• Required to wear personal protective equipment (safety shirt/vest, eye protection, hard hat, gloves, etc.).

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience using hand and power tools, equipment, and mechanical devices of the trade.
• Knowledge of mechanical repair procedures for diesel and gasoline engines.
• Ability to diagnose problems and repair equipment, including electronic and mechanical components and subsystems, according to defined codes and specifications.
• Proficiency with computers and Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word).
• Experience troubleshooting, repairing, and calibrating electronic and mechanical components and subsystems.
• Experience with brake repairs, including antilocking systems, mechanical brakes, air brakes, and hydraulic brake systems.
• Diagnostic skills with automotive and diesel computer applications.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

• Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs.
• Kneeling: Bending legs at the knee to come to a rest on one or both knees.
• Subject to noise, extreme cold, and heat (below 32°F and/or above 100°F for more than one hour).
