FIT NYC Full-Time Faculty Position in Creative Styling for Media Area, School of Art and Design

FIT, an internationally renowned college of art and design, business, and technology within the State University of New York, invites applications for a full-time tenure-track faculty position in the Photography and Related Media Department of the School of Art and Design. The college offers over 45 majors and grants AAS, BFA, BS, MA, MFA, and MPS degrees, preparing students for professional success in the global marketplace. The Styling for Creative Media BFA program, housed in the department, integrates styling, image-making, technology, and contemporary visual culture, preparing graduates for careers in commercial, editorial, cultural, and experiential contexts.

About the role

The Styling for Creative Media BFA program seeks a tenure-track faculty member to shape the future of styling, creative direction, and image-making amid evolving media technologies. The ideal candidate will demonstrate expertise in commercial styling (wardrobe, prop/set, events, lifestyle) with a focus on photographic and time-based projects, as well as engagement with emerging technologies such as AI, computational imaging, virtual production, and immersive experiences. The role involves teaching courses in styling, trend forecasting, creative direction, media production, and computational technology at all levels, contributing to curriculum development, and collaborating with faculty across lens-based media.

Responsibilities

• Teach a wide range of courses in styling, trend forecasting, creative direction, media production, social media practices, and emerging computational technologies at introductory, intermediate, and advanced levels.
• Contribute to the development and assessment of the Styling for Creative Media curriculum.
• Participate in departmental leadership, governance, and administrative/committee service.
• Collaborate with faculty across the Photography and Related Media Department to integrate styling, photography, creative direction, and emerging technologies.
• Provide mentorship, advisement, and feedback to students, including participation in work reviews and student club activities.
• Enrich the learning experience through engagement with professional artists, stylists, creative directors, and New York’s cultural institutions.
• Maintain an active commercial practice and/or exhibition, publishing, or screening record.
• Demonstrate commitment to student-centered learning and cultural diversity in instruction.
• Stay current with technological advancements relevant to styling, photography, and emerging media.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in styling, photography, fashion, creative direction, or a related creative field.
• Minimum of 6 years of commercial practice in styling, creative direction, or related fields.
• Portfolio demonstrating expertise in styling for photographic and time-based projects, with engagement in emerging technologies (e.g., AI, virtual production, computational imaging).
• Substantial record of published commercial work, exhibitions, monographs, or screenings.
• Ability to teach across traditional and computational styling practices, with a foundation in artistic skills and innovation.
• Experience working with diverse cultural, racial, ethnic, and social groups, and contextualizing work within global art and design histories.
• Professional experience in photography, editorial image-making, or commercial production is highly desirable.

Preferred Qualifications

• 10+ years of experience as a stylist and/or creative director.
• Prior college-level teaching experience.

Pay

Salary is based on education level and cumulative experience, per the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) Salary Schedules (pgs. 73–74):

• Instructor: $69,346.37 – $80,793.82
• Assistant Professor: $80,736.40 – $118,984.88
• Associate Professor: $94,498.31 – $142,271.78
• Professor: $115,232.32 – $173,403.37
