About the role

We are currently seeking two skilled and team-oriented applicants for the Fiscal Specialist 2 – Student Accounting position. Under general supervision, the Fiscal Specialist 2 is a vital member of the Student Accounting team in the Division of Student Affairs at Eastern Washington University. Reporting to the Director for Strategic Initiatives, this position provides accounting and purchasing support for their respective budget area: Student Accounting Office, Student Clubs and Organizations, or the Division of Student Affairs.

The performance of duties requires the ability to exercise independent judgment in interpreting and applying rules and regulations, resolve problems, independently advise divisional, departmental, and student club and organization leaders, staff, and administrators regarding applicable policy and procedures, select/recommend alternative courses of action, and perform a wide variety of job functions that support the student experience.

The Student Accounting Office serves as primary support for fiscal/accounting functions tied to the Services and Activities Fee revenues, student clubs and organizations, and Student Affairs departments and programs. Incumbents use established procedures in recording, summarizing, and reporting fiscal activity. This is an in-person position at EWU, offering an exciting opportunity for a detail-oriented, collaborative, and student-centered professional to shape a growing service area through innovation and initiative.

Responsibilities

  • Provide accounting and purchasing support for budget areas including the Student Accounting Office, Student Clubs and Organizations, or the Division of Student Affairs.
  • Interpret and apply rules, regulations, policies, and procedures in a fiscal administrative setting.
  • Resolve fiscal problems and recommend alternative courses of action.
  • Maintain and reconcile both manual and electronic financial records and fines.
  • Process and/or review financial transactions such as purchases, reimbursements, invoices, and budget tracking.
  • Advise divisional, departmental, and student club and organization leaders, staff, and administrators on applicable fiscal policies and procedures.
  • Handle a demanding workload with overlapping deadlines, requiring strong attention to detail, perseverance, initiative, and the ability to work both independently and under direction.
  • Deliver high-volume customer service involving communications with a wide variety of stakeholders (e.g., agencies, private businesses, professionals, internal staff, managers, administrators) via verbal, telephonic, email, and written correspondence.
  • Support and educate students in a higher education setting, promoting cultural competency, universal accessibility, and diversity.

Requirements

  • A total combination of 5 years of education and/or experience in fiscal reporting, accounting, or related work. This could include:
    • An Associate’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or other relevant area AND two years of related work experience, OR
    • An equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Strong computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Outlook, Word) and Microsoft Windows programs.
  • Two years’ experience maintaining and reconciling both manual and electronic financial records and fines.
  • Two years’ high-volume customer service experience involving communications with a wide variety of stakeholders (e.g., agencies, businesses, professionals, internal staff, managers, administrators) via verbal, telephonic, email, and written correspondence.
  • Two years’ work experience demonstrating the ability to handle a demanding workload with overlapping deadlines, requiring strong attention to detail, perseverance, initiative, and the ability to work both independently and under direction.
  • Two years’ experience processing and/or reviewing financial transactions such as purchases, reimbursements, invoices, and budget tracking.
  • Two years’ experience interpreting and applying policies, procedures, and regulations in a fiscal administrative setting.
  • Strong desire and demonstrated ability to work with, support, and educate students in a higher education setting.
  • Demonstrated interest, ability, and/or experience promoting cultural competency, universal accessibility, and/or diversity.
  • Authorization to work for ANY employer in the U.S. (sponsorship is not available for this position).
  • Compliance with EWU Immunization Policy 602-02, providing proof of immunity or vaccination to MMR before beginning work (waivers available for medical or sincerely held religious beliefs).
  • Successful completion and passing of a background check prior to employment, as this position involves accountability for university funds and unsupervised access to vulnerable populations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate’s degree (AA) in Accounting, Finance, or a related field, or completion of at least two years of college coursework in accounting, finance, or a related field.
  • Two or more years’ work experience in a higher education environment.
  • Experience managing and reconciling financial records from multiple funding sources (e.g., state appropriations, fees, fines, student funds such as Service & Activities Fees).
  • Experience with financial/accounting systems such as QuickBooks or similar software.
  • Experience supporting student clubs and organizations, student activities, or student fee-funded programs.
  • Experience with State of Washington Office of Financial Management (OFM) policies and procedures.

Pay

$47,004 - $50,424 annually. Starting salary within this range is dependent on education, experience, and skills.

Schedule

  • Regular, full-time position.
  • Work schedule: Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM–5:00 PM, with occasional nights and weekends.
  • Term of appointment: 12 months.
