Responsibilities

  • Responds to fire alarms for all classes of fires, including those involving radioactive and/or hazardous materials, medical emergencies, rescue operations, wild land fires, hazardous material incidents, and aircraft emergencies.
  • Performs daily operational checks for both truck and equipment to ensure operational readiness at all times.
  • Serves as a member of the Crash Rescue Team responding to any military or privately owned plane crash on or in the vicinity of the installation.
  • As an Emergency Medical Technician with Basic Life Support training, responds to accidents and other emergencies and follows approved department protocols in providing basic life support and performing emergency procedures.
  • As a fully qualified Hazardous Materials Technician, responds as a member of the department's hazardous materials team.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Requires completion of pre-employment and periodic subsequent medical examinations to ensure continued physical health and ability to perform duties.
  • Requires the ability to lift up to 50 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
  • Subject to compliance with Federal and Department of the Army Drug Free Workplace Programs, including pre-employment and random drug testing.
  • Designated as Mission Essential; required to report to work or remain at work during severe weather or emergencies.
  • Must wear a uniform and safety apparel in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Requires successful completion of an annual Job Performance Test.
  • Requires participation in a cardiovascular physical fitness program.
  • Must possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver’s License to operate vehicles; requires successful completion of an annual emergency vehicle operator’s course.
  • Must conform to requirements set forth in the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1500, Fire Department Occupational Health and Safety Program.
  • Requires shift work, including evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations; 48-hour rotating shifts with a work schedule of 144 hours per pay period.
  • Works 72 hours per week (144 hours per pay period), including at least one 24-hour shift, nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Occasional travel is required (5%).
  • Appointment subject to a one-year probationary period unless previously met.

Qualifications

To qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience.

GS-03 Level

  • General Experience: Six months of general experience demonstrating the ability to follow directions, read, understand, and retain instructions, regulations, and procedures.
  • Education/Training: One year of education above high school related to fire protection and/or prevention, or six months of appropriate firefighter training.
  • Combination: A combination of education/training and experience may be used to qualify.

GS-04 Level

  • Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience including controlling and extinguishing fires, operating hose lines, and making force entries.
  • Education: Two years of education above high school in Fire Training, Fire Science, or related fields.
  • Combination: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify.

GS-05 Level

  • Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience including controlling and extinguishing fires, operating hose lines, making force entries, and performing rescue operations including administering first aid.
  • Education: Four years of education above high school in Fire Science, Fire Training, or related fields.
  • Combination: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify.

GS-06 Level

  • Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience including operating firefighting equipment, using extinguishing agents, performing medical services, and identifying/containing hazardous products.

GS-07 Level

  • Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience including controlling and extinguishing fires, performing rescue operations, administering emergency medical aid, and utilizing hazardous material response equipment.

Additional Qualifications

Applicants must possess certifications through DoD Fire and Emergency Services Certification System, International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC), or the Fire Service Professional Qualifications System (PRO-Board) in accordance with DoD 6055.06-M, and a State or National Registry EMT Certification (when applicable).

Certifications Required by Grade Level

  • GS-05: Firefighter I, Firefighter II
  • GS-06: Firefighter I, Firefighter II, Hazmat Operations, Airport Firefighter
  • GS-07: Firefighter I, Firefighter II, Hazmat Technician, Airport Firefighter, Emergency Medical Technician - Basic

Education

If using foreign education to meet qualification requirements, you must show that the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization specializing in interpretation of foreign education programs and deemed equivalent to a U.S. education program.

About the Location

The position is located at United States Army Garrison Dugway Proving Ground, approximately 50 minutes from Tooele, Utah, and a 90-minute drive from Salt Lake City, Utah. Dugway offers various alternate work schedule opportunities, including 4 ten-hour shifts Monday through Thursday. The installation is self-sufficient with government housing, an AAFES PX, commissary, community club, fitness center, swimming pool, post chapel, childcare, youth services, and a K-12 school system. Subsidized commuter van transport is available for employees living off-post.
