Firefighter (Hazardous Materials Technician / Basic Life Support).

This position is open to U.S. citizens and includes a one-year probationary period. Male applicants born after December 31, 1959, must be registered with the Selective Service. Direct deposit of pay is required.

Responsibilities

• Performs firefighting and rescue operations.
• Assigned to a crew engaged in all-hazards response functions.
• Performs emergency medical procedures at the Emergency Medical Technician level.
• Drives and operates firefighting/rescue vehicles and equipment.

Requirements

• Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, including a completed background investigation.
• Requires pre-employment and periodic medical examinations to ensure physical health and ability to perform duties.
• Must lift up to 50 lbs. regularly.
• Compliance with Federal and Department of the Army Drug-Free Workplace Programs; subject to pre-employment and random drug testing.
• Designated as Mission Essential; required to report to work during emergencies, severe weather, or other situations.
• Requires shift work, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and rotating 48-hour shifts (144 hours per pay period).
• Must possess or obtain a valid state Driver’s License to operate vehicles.
• Must conform to NFPA 1550 (Fire Department Occupational Health and Safety Program).
• Must pass a Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) Fit Test.
• Must pass the Physical Ability Test (PAT) upon hire and annually thereafter.
• Must participate in the department’s wellness program, including a structured physical exercise program.
• Subject to recall during emergencies and may be required to work during dismissal or closure announcements.
• Must obtain and maintain eligibility for a Secret security clearance; background investigation and credit check required.
• Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 10% of the time.

Qualifications

To qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience includes paid and unpaid work, such as volunteer experience through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) or other organizations. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience. If qualifying based on education, transcripts will be required.

Specialized Experience by Grade Level

GS-04

• One year of specialized experience, including performing all-hazards response operations as a member of an organized fire department or brigade (equivalent to GS-03).

OR

• Two years of education above high school in Fire Science, Fire Training, Paramedicine, or related fields.

OR

• Combination of education and experience (totaling 100% of requirements).

Certifications for GS-04

• No certification required at entry.
• Must obtain Firefighter I, Firefighter II, and HAZMAT Tech within 12 months of appointment.

GS-05

• One year of specialized experience, including performing all-hazards response operations and driving/operating firefighting apparatus (equivalent to GS-04).

OR

• Four years of education above high school in Fire Science, Fire Training, Paramedicine, or related fields.

OR

• Combination of education and experience (totaling 100% of requirements).

Certifications for GS-05

• Firefighter I
• Firefighter II
• HAZMAT Tech

GS-06

• One year of specialized experience, including performing all-hazards response operations, driving/operating firefighting apparatus, and operating as a hazardous material response team member at the technician level (equivalent to GS-05).

• National Registry or equivalent state-issued Emergency Medical Technician (NREMT)

GS-07

• One year of specialized experience, including performing all-hazards response operations, driving/operating firefighting apparatus, operating as a hazardous material response team member at the technician level, performing emergency medical care at the EMT level, and performing aircraft rescue and firefighting operations (equivalent to GS-06).

• Must obtain Driver Operator - Aerial, Driver Operator - ARFF, and Driver Operator - MWS within 12 months of appointment.

Additional Information

• Maximum Entry Age (MEA): 37 years. Must be hired by the last day of the month you reach 37.
• Maximum Reentry Age: Employees previously in a covered position may be rehired past the MEA if they can complete 20 years of covered service by mandatory retirement age (57 for firefighters).
• Foreign Education: If using foreign education, credentials must be evaluated by a private organization specializing in foreign education equivalency.
