About the role

This position is a Mission Essential role requiring shift work to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations. The work schedule consists of 48-hour rotating shifts with 144 hours per pay period (72-hour work week). The incumbent may be required to work overtime, nights, weekends, and holidays.

Responsibilities

  • Performs firefighting and rescue operations.
  • Assigned to a crew engaged in all-hazards response functions.
  • Performs emergency medical procedures to provide Basic Life Support (BLS).
  • Drives and operates firefighting/rescue vehicles and equipment.
  • Detects, reduces, and/or eliminates potential fire hazards (GS-06 and above).
  • Operates as a member of a hazardous material response team at the technician level (GS-07).
  • Participates in a cardiovascular physical fitness program.
  • Wears a uniform and appropriate safety apparel in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Maintains a functioning telephone at residence to aid in contact during recall/emergency situations.
  • Occasional TDY travel is required.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Must complete pre-employment and periodic subsequent medical examinations in accordance with DoDM 6055.06.
  • Must lift up to 45 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
  • Compliance with Federal and Department of the Army Drug Free Workplace Programs; subject to pre-employment and random drug testing.
  • Must possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver’s License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
  • Must successfully complete an annual Job Performance Test and Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) Fit Test.
  • Must receive a Hepatitis B vaccination or sign a waiver.
  • Must obtain and maintain an appropriate Emergency Vehicle Operator’s certification and complete an annual emergency vehicle operator’s course.
  • Must obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment.
  • Must obtain and maintain the following certifications within the specified timeframes:
    • GS-05:
      • Firefighter I
      • Firefighter II
      • HAZMAT Operations (within 12 months of appointment)
      • National Registry or equivalent state-issued Emergency Medical Technician (NREMT) - Basic (within 12 months of appointment)
    • GS-06:
      • Firefighter I
      • Firefighter II
      • HAZMAT Operations
      • National Registry or equivalent state-issued Emergency Medical Technician (NREMT) - Basic
      • HAZMAT Technician (within 12 months of appointment)
      • Driver Operator - Pumper (within 12 months of appointment)
      • Driver Operator - Aerial (within 12 months of appointment)
      • National Wildlife Coordinating Group S-190 (within 12 months of appointment)
      • National Wildlife Coordinating Group S-130 (within 12 months of appointment)
    • GS-07:
      • Firefighter I
      • Firefighter II
      • HAZMAT Technician
      • Driver Operator - Pumper
      • Driver Operator - Aerial
      • National Registry or equivalent state-issued Emergency Medical Technician (NREMT) - Basic
      • Driver Operator - Mobile Water Supply (within 12 months of appointment)

  • Maximum Entry Age (MEA) for Firefighters is 37. Must be hired by the last day of the month the applicant reaches 37.
  • Rehired employees previously serving in a covered position may be rehired past the MEA if able to complete 20 years of covered service by mandatory retirement age (57 for firefighters).

To qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience. If qualifying based on education, transcripts will be required as part of your application.

  • GS-05:

    One year of specialized experience which includes:

    • Controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer, or governmental fire department or brigade.
    • Operating firefighting apparatus and equipment.

    OR

    Four years of education above the high school level in an accredited college or university in Fire Science, Fire Training, Paramedicine, or other related fields of study.

    OR

    A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify if the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%.

  • GS-06:

    One year of specialized experience which includes:

    • Performing all-hazards response operations as a member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer, or governmental fire department or brigade.
    • Operating firefighting apparatus and equipment.
    • Detecting, reducing, and/or eliminating potential fire hazards.
    • Performing emergency medical care at the EMT level.
  • GS-07:

    One year of specialized experience which includes:

    • Performing all-hazards response operations as a member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer, or governmental fire department or brigade.
    • Driving and operating firefighting apparatus and equipment.
    • Operating as a member of a hazardous material response team at the technician level.
    • Performing emergency medical care at the EMT level.

Foreign Education: If using education completed in foreign colleges or universities, you must show the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and deemed equivalent to a U.S. education program.
