About the role

Join our team for a stable, in-person position with a regular schedule, allowing you to go home by dinner most nights. This role involves installing, repairing, and maintaining the University’s fire alarm systems and components. You may also staff a swing shift trouble truck.

Responsibilities

• 30% – Troubleshoot and repair fire alarm systems. Identify applicable codes and standards pertaining to fire alarm systems.
• 30% – Perform preventive maintenance, record keeping for fire alarm systems, and coordinate programming of the system.
• 20% – Fabricate, install, modify, and maintain campus fire alarm systems. Requisition equipment, materials, and parts.
• 10% – Interpret and detail blueprints, as-builts, specifications, and archives for investigating repairs and project preparation.
• 10% – Correspondence through email, training, meetings, and professional development.

Requirements

• Completion of a high school education or an equivalent combination of technical training and experience.
• Successful completion of an applicable trade-specific Trades Helper program, or completion of an approved apprenticeship program, or an associate degree, or equivalent education/experience.
• Five years’ experience in the trade, including five years of experience in commercial fire alarm systems installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting.
• Demonstrated ability to independently perform the duties and responsibilities of the classification, or equivalent experience.
• Possession of the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET) I certification or a State of Michigan Journeyman Electrical License.
• Must have possession of NICET II certification to receive progression step increases at and after the 12-month mark.
• Must have possession of the State of Michigan Fire Alarm Specialty Technician License to receive progression step increase at the 24-month mark.
• Expert knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, equipment, occupational hazards, and safety precautions of the trade.
• Expert knowledge of applicable National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) codes, rules, and regulations (local, state, and federal).
• Possession of a valid vehicle operator's license.
• Must furnish own hand tools.
• Frequent lifting of 26 to 75 pounds and occasional lifting of over 75 pounds.

Qualifications

• Associate’s degree in electronics technology
• Electrical journeyman’s license
• Possession of NICET II Certification
• Possession of State of Michigan Fire Alarm Specialty Technician (FAST) license
• Knowledge of sprinkler systems (wet and dry)
• Ability to respond to emergency call-ins within one hour of initial contact
• Strong technical and communication skills
• Focus on innovative solutions aligned with University goals

Schedule

Non-standard/variable work hours: Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM. May require after-hours, weekend, and holiday work.

Physical Demands

• Lifting and carrying up to 75 pounds
• Pushing/pulling
• Climbing ladders, stairs, and working from various types of equipment, including scaffolding
• Wearing a respirator (does not include a paper dust mask worn for comfort)
