Fire Alarm Mechanic / Mechanic Fire Alarm Systems

Michigan State University Infrastructure Planning and Facilities invites applications for a Fire Alarm Mechanic position in East Lansing, Michigan. This is a full-time, unionized role within the Skilled Trades group.

Position Summary

This role involves installing, repairing, and maintaining the University’s fire alarm systems and components, with potential swing-shift trouble truck duties.

Responsibilities

• 30% - Troubleshoot and repair fire alarm systems, identifying applicable codes and standards.
• 30% - Perform preventive maintenance, record keeping, and coordinate programming of fire alarm systems.
• 20% - Fabricate, install, and modify campus fire alarm systems; requisition equipment, materials, and parts.
• 10% - Interpret and detail blueprints, as-builts, specifications, and archives for repairs and project preparation.
• 10% - Engage in correspondence via email, training, meetings, and professional development.

Requirements

• Completion of high school education or equivalent technical training/experience.
• Successful completion of a trade-specific Trades Helper program, approved apprenticeship, associate degree, or equivalent education/experience.
• Five years of experience in commercial fire alarm systems installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting.
• Possession of NICET I certification or a State of Michigan Journeyman Electrical License.
• Must obtain NICET II certification within 12 months and a State of Michigan Fire Alarm Specialty Technician License within 24 months for progression step increases.
• Expert knowledge of trade methods, materials, tools, safety precautions, and NFPA codes.
• Valid vehicle operator’s license and ability to furnish own hand tools.
• Frequent lifting of 26–75 pounds and occasional lifting over 75 pounds.

Qualifications

• Associate’s degree in electronics technology or electrical journeyman’s license.
• NICET II Certification or State of Michigan Fire Alarm Specialty Technician (FAST) license.
• Knowledge of wet and dry sprinkler systems.
• Ability to respond to emergency call-ins within one hour.
• Strong technical, communication, and problem-solving skills with a focus on innovative solutions.

Pay

$33.64 - $38.43 per hour, upon meeting progression step requirements.

Schedule

Non-standard/variable work hours: Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, with potential after-hours, weekend, and holiday work.

Physical Demands

• Lifting and carrying up to 75 pounds.
• Pushing/pulling and climbing ladders, stairs, or scaffolding.
• Wearing a respirator (not a paper dust mask).
• Exposure to health risks such as lead, asbestos, formaldehyde, or chemotherapy agents.
