About the role

Join our team where you always commute to the same site, on a regular schedule, and get to go home by dinner most nights. This position is responsible for all aspects of installing, repairing, and maintaining the University’s fire alarm systems and components. The role may include staffing a swing shift trouble truck.

Responsibilities

• 30% - Troubleshoot and repair fire alarm systems. Identify applicable codes and standards pertaining to fire alarm systems.
• 30% - Perform preventive maintenance, record keeping for fire alarm systems, and coordinate programming of the system.
• 20% - Fabricate, install, modify campus fire alarm systems. Requisition of equipment, materials, and parts.
• 10% - Interpret and detail blueprints, as-builts, specifications, and archives for investigating repairs and project preparation.
• 10% - Correspondence through email, training, meetings, and professional development.

Requirements

• Completion of a high school education or an equivalent combination of technical training and experience.
• Successful completion of an applicable trade-specific Trades Helper program, or completion of an approved apprenticeship program, or an associate degree, or equivalent education/experience.
• Five years’ experience in the trade, including five years of experience in commercial fire alarm systems installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting.
• Demonstrated ability to independently perform the duties and responsibilities of the classification, or equivalent experience.
• Possession of the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET) I certification or a State of Michigan Journeyman Electrical License.
• Must have possession of NICET II certification to receive progression step increases at and after the 12-month mark.
• Must have possession of the State of Michigan Fire Alarm Specialty Technician License to receive progression step increase at the 24-month mark.
• Expert knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, equipment, occupational hazards, and safety precautions of the trade.
• Expert knowledge of applicable National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) codes, rules, and regulations (local, state, and federal).
• Possession of a valid vehicle operator's license.
• Must furnish own hand tools.
• Frequent lifting of 26 to 75 pounds and occasional lifting of over 75 pounds.

Qualifications

• Associate’s degree in electronics technology
• Electrical journeyman’s license
• Possession of NICET II Certification
• Possession of State of Michigan Fire Alarm Specialty Technician (FAST) license
• Knowledge of sprinkler systems (wet and dry)
• Ability to respond to emergency call-ins within one hour of initial contact
• Strong technical and communication skills
• Focus on innovative solutions aligned with University goals

Schedule

Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, with potential after-hours, weekend, and holiday work.

Physical Demands

• Lifting and carrying up to 75 pounds
• Pushing/pulling
• Climbing ladders, stairs, and working from various types of equipment, including scaffolding
• Wearing a respirator (does not include a paper dust mask worn for comfort)
