About the role

The Financial Counseling Representative provides financial counseling to assist patients in understanding their financial responsibility to Sanford and to offer appropriate resources and options to meet that responsibility. Answers billing questions, reviews patient's insurance coverage and Explanation of Benefits (EOBs), and provides clarification regarding incurred charges. Reviews insurance denials and explains them to patients, assists in setting up payment arrangements, and determines eligibility for payment assistance programs. Educates patients on insurance concepts and may assist with medical assistance program paperwork or referrals to Medicaid and other aid programs. Advises uninsured patients on outstanding medical costs and establishes payment plans. Interacts with patients in-person, requiring empathy and the ability to diffuse strong emotions. Calculates and provides cost estimates for medical procedures, advises on and collects prepayments for uncovered services, and may perform guest service duties as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Provide financial counseling to patients regarding their financial responsibility.
  • Answer billing questions and review insurance coverage and Explanation of Benefits (EOBs).
  • Explain charges incurred and reasons for insurance denials.
  • Assist in setting up payment arrangements and review payment plan guidelines.
  • Determine patient eligibility for payment assistance programs and assist with applications.
  • Educate patients on insurance concepts, such as copayments, covered services, effective dates, referrals, and resubmitting claims.
  • Assist with medical assistance program paperwork and referrals to Medicaid or other aid programs.
  • Advise uninsured patients on outstanding medical costs and establish payment plans.
  • Calculate and provide cost estimates for medical procedures, including the patient's anticipated share.
  • Advise on and collect prepayments for services not covered by insurance.
  • Perform guest service duties as needed.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred; post-secondary education preferred.
  • Two years' experience in healthcare service or health insurance preferred.
  • Computer skills sufficient to operate online systems and complex software with advanced functionality.
  • Oral and written communication skills to interpret and apply policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of third-party payers and basic bookkeeping or accounting principles.
  • Thorough understanding of insurance products and ability to read an EOB to determine adjustments, payments, and pending balances.

Pay

Salary range: $17.75 - $28.00 per hour.
