About the Role

Reporting to the Senior Assistant Director of Outreach and Client Services, this position works directly with students to enhance their understanding of opportunities for, and processes and responsibilities of, a financial aid recipient. This role provides students, families, UNLV staff, and the internal and external community with information about financing higher education.

The Financial Aid Counselor will explain key types and concepts of higher education funding, including scholarships, debt management strategies, costs of attendance, basic financial planning, financial aid policy and procedure, necessary paperwork, follow-up processes (electronic correspondence, phone calls), business processes, web portal navigation (both UNLV and external), and interactive applications.

This individual attends outreach activities to meet one-on-one with prospective and current students and parents, explain financial aid processes, review student accounts for eligibility and award status, and provide group presentations as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Explain financial aid processes, including scholarships, debt management, costs of attendance, and financial planning.
  • Assist students and families with understanding financial aid policies, procedures, and required paperwork.
  • Conduct one-on-one meetings and group presentations to review student accounts for eligibility and award status.
  • Navigate and guide students through UNLV and external web portals and interactive applications.
  • Participate in outreach activities to engage with prospective and current students and parents.
  • Support UNLV’s mission of increasing enrollment and promoting equitable student success.
  • Uphold UNLV’s core values, including professionalism, collaboration, ethics, and inclusion.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university (recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and/or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation). Degree must be from a regionally accredited program within higher education. Credentials must be obtained prior to the employment start date.
  • 1–3 years of related professional experience.
  • Must not be in overpayment or default status for any Federal Student Aid program or award.
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable vehicle with valid auto insurance.

Pay

Salary is competitive with those at similarly situated institutions and contingent upon funding.
