About the role

We are looking for a Finance Manager to oversee core accounting activities and help maintain reliable financial operations for a mission-focused organization in Richmond, Virginia. This role combines hands-on financial management with support for grant oversight, payroll administration, budgeting, and selected human resources processes.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee daily financial operations by managing payables, receivables, reconciliations, and other routine accounting tasks that keep records current and accurate.
  • Maintain the general ledger and prepare timely financial information to support leadership decision-making, program activity, and external reporting needs.
  • Monitor income and spending across programs, grants, and funding categories to ensure expenses are recorded correctly and restricted funds are used appropriately.
  • Administer vendor payments, recurring disbursements, and payroll processing while verifying accuracy and supporting compliance with applicable requirements.
  • Partner with leadership on annual budgeting, month-end close activities, cash flow visibility, and the preparation of internal financial reports.
  • Assist with audit readiness by organizing supporting documentation, strengthening internal controls, and helping compile materials for compliance reviews and required filings.
  • Contribute to grant financial administration by tracking allocations, documenting transactions, and supporting reporting tied to funded initiatives.
  • Support employee recordkeeping, benefits coordination, onboarding and offboarding activities, and maintenance of HR-related documentation and policies.
  • Help coordinate hiring logistics, time and leave tracking, and adherence to federal and state employment guidelines relevant to day-to-day operations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, Human Resources, or a related discipline, or equivalent relevant experience.
  • At least 3 years of experience in accounting or finance, with additional exposure to HR administration considered a plus.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with QuickBooks or QuickBooks Online and strong working knowledge of Microsoft Excel.
  • Experience preparing budgets, supporting month-end close, and producing clear, accurate financial reports.
  • Familiarity with payroll administration for a small workforce and understanding of related compliance considerations.
  • Ability to stay organized, manage competing deadlines, and maintain a high level of accuracy in detailed financial work.
  • Strong interpersonal and written communication skills, with the ability to work collaboratively across teams.
  • Background in a nonprofit or other small-organization environment is highly preferred.
