About the Facility
The Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital (KBRH) is the largest diagnostic and acute care hospital in the West Kootenays, serving 80,000 people in the region. This 75-bed full-service hospital provides core specialist physician services, including:
- 24-hour Emergency and Trauma Services
- Level 2 Laboratory
- Intensive Care Unit (ICU)
- Acute and Obstetrical Care
- Orthopedics, Plastics, Urology, Ophthalmology, and Psychiatry
- Chemotherapy and advanced diagnostic services
KBRH is the regional base for the 24-hour High Acuity Response Team (HART), consisting of critical care transport nurses and, as required, respiratory therapists. HART supports rural and remote clinicians in transporting and managing critically ill and injured patients, with transfers to Kelowna (313 km from Trail) facilitated by BC Ambulance Services.
About the Role
We are actively recruiting a 0.4 to 1.0 FTE General Practitioner in Oncology (GPO) to join Dr. Katie Forman in the GP Oncology Program at KBRH. The selected physician will deliver a range of cancer services to patients with all possible tumor sites, primarily in the outpatient setting but also supporting inpatient, indirect, and remote care. Responsibilities span the entire treatment pathway, from primary treatment through survivorship.
Responsibilities
- Supervise treatment using chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and targeted therapy
- Provide patient education, supportive care, and end-of-life/palliative care planning
- Manage acute toxicities, dose adjustments, and treatment plan modifications
- Support infusions and provide visit summaries
- Monitor patients post-treatment for cancer recurrence or treatment-related complications
- Maintain regular communication with specialists regarding patient care plans
- Collaborate as part of an interdisciplinary team, consulting with other health professionals as needed
- Act as a resource for primary care providers and other healthcare professionals on cancer care issues (e.g., guidance during work-up of suspected cancer patients, referral processes, and management of cancer patients)
This role is profoundly meaningful to patients and does not involve on-call service or evening work. No previous oncology experience is required; the department will support the successful applicant in developing the requisite expertise.
Training
The mandatory GP Oncology training is an 8-week course, including 4 weeks of online didactic learning and 6 weeks of practical training with the BC Cancer Agency. The next training session is to be determined via virtual delivery. REAP funding is available for this training. Interested candidates are encouraged to start with the 4-week introductory didactic module to assess their interest in the full program.

Pay
Compensation is provided through a Clinical Service Contract with competitive remuneration. There are no overhead costs for physicians.
Benefits and Incentives
Eligible physicians may receive additional remuneration under the Rural Subsidiary Agreement (RSA), including:
- Retention Premium: 11.48%
- Retention Flat Fee: $17,791
- Relocation Funding: $9,000–$15,000 (based on move location)
- Recruitment Incentive: $15,000 (for full-time positions)
Candidates with a BC or Canada student loan may qualify for loan forgiveness programs. Note: Rural incentives are subject to change, and current rates are confirmed at the time of offer.
