Peckham is a nonprofit vocational rehabilitation organization specializing in providing vocational rehabilitation and training opportunities for people with significant disabilities and/or other barriers to employment. This position is open to all interested candidates, both people with and without disabilities.

About the role

The Facilities Grounds Level I position assists the Grounds Coordinator and the Grounds Technician in activities that preserve and improve the landscapes and other outdoor spaces at Peckham facilities throughout the Mid-Michigan area. During the growing season, primary duties include planting, transplanting, hand weeding, spreading mulch, and caring for turf and ornamentals. In the off-season, responsibilities may include general building maintenance, hoop house and farm maintenance, basic building and equipment maintenance, general cleaning, leaf removal, holiday decoration setup/removal, and snow removal. This position may also work on special projects with Farm or Facilities staff and promotes Peckham's vision, values, and services.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with grounds maintenance activities such as planting ornamentals, installing mulch, hand weeding, raking, and trash pick-up.
  • Use a leaf blower to remove leaves, grass clippings, etc.
  • Shovel and rake soil and mulch.
  • Cultivate soil, plant ornamentals, and control weeds by hand pulling and hoeing.
  • Assist with snow removal, clearing emergency exits and walking areas, spreading salt and deicer, and constructing snow fences.
  • Assist with agricultural or horticultural activities at Peckham Farm.
  • Assist with special projects such as live wall plant installation.
  • Assist in specialty cleaning of wall, ceiling, and floor surfaces.
  • Assist with setup and removal of holiday decorations around Lansing area facilities (e.g., hanging lights, setting up displays).
  • Assist with general facility maintenance including repair, cleaning, and upkeep of fixtures, appliances, storage racking, and furniture using hand tools.
  • Maintain a safe and healthy work area and report any safety concerns to the supervisor.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Ability to climb ladders and work from heights, and kneel or crouch for extended periods.
  • Ability to distinguish between red and green.
  • Must bathe or shower and change clothes regularly.
  • Possess or obtain within 90 days a valid MI driver’s license.
  • Ability to read a tape measure.
  • Basic knowledge of landscape and building maintenance.
  • Ability to read simple documents, instructions, and manuals in English.
  • Basic computer knowledge.
  • Ability to follow and carry out written and oral instructions in English.
  • Basic math skills: counting, addition, and subtraction.
  • Access to reliable transportation.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in landscape or turf maintenance.
  • Experience operating motorized equipment.
  • Experience working in a team setting and maintaining respectful communication.
  • Ability to stay on task independently.

  • Regularly required to kneel, sit, bend, walk, use fingers, hands, arms, and legs to handle or feel.

  • Must frequently lift and/or move up to 30 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Use of wheelbarrows, shop vacs, rolling scaffolding, folding ladders, extension ladders, power washers, assorted hand tools, shovels, hoes, rakes, string trimmers, lawn edgers, hedge trimmers, leaf blowers, push mowers, riding mowers, ATV, UTV, golf cart, scissor lift, pumps, sprinklers, snow blowers, salt and fertilizer spreaders, and spot spray cans.

Work Environment

The work environment characteristics described are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.

  • Exposure to moving mechanical parts.
  • Occasional exposure to fumes, dust, or airborne particles.
  • Occasionally loud noise levels.
  • Outdoor work exposed to insects, weather conditions, and temperature extremes in all seasons.

Pay

$14.73 per hour

Schedule

7:00 am - 3:30 pm Monday - Friday, plus overtime as necessary
